Hello all,

I have three (soon to be for) bikes with Di2. The older bikes are 2012 models and have the old 10 cog rears. The 2020 Bianchi has the 11 speed, but when on the small chain it does not go into the two smallest cogs.

So essentially I’m operating a 20 speed with both Di2 group sets. I was told by the dealer that this was purposefully done to prevent cross chaining.

So I’m wondering if this “feature” can be overridden, and if not, why would anyone pay to “upgrade” to 11 speed? I happen to like the gears that are locked out.

I've heard you can tell it the cassette is something like an 11-28. Never tried. The thing with not being able to use the small cogs isn't really an issue because you have close enough ratios to them in the big ring.

It was annoying when using manual shifting mode. Seemed a waste of my time to have to shift front and back to get that one higher ratio in the small front. Since I started using full syncro mode it doesn't bother me.

Yes you can "cheat" the Di2 system to move to the 2 smallest cogs. You need to use the E-Tube software and "tell" the system you are using a different cassette and crank combo. Some combo's, like a 50/34 crank and certain cassettes get locked out. Others work and when you turn off Gear Position and use the system in Manual mode (no Syncro), you can use those cogs. You have to play around with which cranks and cassettes work, I think a 53/39 crank and 12-25 is one combo.

The 11 speed is better.
Why? Well, it’s one faster, isn’t it? It’s not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be riding at ten...Where can you go from there? Where? The new ones go to eleven.

I guess I'm thinking sideways, but except for forgetting the setting for the front also had to be changed and being wrong on exactly which cassette......... what am I missing.

Go all spinal tap..... just be nice. I don't mind being wrong if I can learn from it.

Like Steve B. mentioned, the feature is called gear position control and it can't be disabled if you've got 52-36 or 50-34 programmed up front. The setting, and "protection", is there to avoid low chain tension not cross chaining. Easy enough to tell E-Tube you've got larger chainrings and disable gear position control, or you could just...not cross chain. Choose your own adventure.

I think the 9100 and 8000 rear derailleurs are a better design. They are more tucked and less susceptible to damage in a crash.
