Stone stuck in carbon wheels
Hi!
First post and wonder if someone could help...
I recently upgraded to a pair of Mavic carbone SLS wheels and the rear spins and you can hear a stone or some kind of debris rattling around inside. Anybody have any tips how you can remove the debris from inside?
Thanks,
Scott.

Is this a Mavic thing? I have the same issue with an old set of Kysriums.
I did get lucky with the rear, where I slowly spun the wheel and retrieved a small piece of metal swarf that may have been a by-product of drilling the hole for the tube. I couldn't do the same for the front wheel, it sounds similar, like there's a small piece of something floating around in there.

Take the tire and tube off. It might be tough to get it to come out of the valve hole, because of the inside curve of the rim, but I'd at least give it a shot. Once you get good an frustrated with that, you can remove the rim tape and get it to rattle out of a spoke hole and then re-tape.

After a pile of years doing this I have seen all sorts of things come out from inside rims. As mentioned - take the tire and tube off and try and get it out of the valve hole. That is the largest hole with access to outside of the rim. You can bounce the wheel lightly on the ground or hard surface to help vibrate the object towards the hole.
When in doubt just hold it above your head, look up into the valve hole and shake it. That will ensure it will come out at exactly that moment and land in your eye. .....so I've heard....

You are hearing this while you are riding? Or just when you are off the bike and turn them slowly?

Only when the wheel turns slowly on the bike stand. I only noticed it when cleaning the bike, and wondered WTF it was - was checking all the spokes and brake pads and bearing adjustment and so on.

I had this on a tubed tire. It was some tiny bits of rubber that somehow got in the tube. Probably when it was made. Wasn't big enough to make anything out of balance, but it was one of those curiosity killed the cat things. In this case I cut open a perfectly good tube just to find out it was nothing to bother with.

I would be really careful that this is not the beginning of a carbon explosion!

I got a pair of Mavic Cosmic Elite UST wheels, and I got the same problem. I only hear it when the bike is in the stand. I pulled off the tape and inspected the rim to find what looks like a some sort of counter weight, perhaps to offset the weight of the valve or a metal slug to hold the rim in place during welding (alloy). Couldn't remove it with a pair of needle nose pliers. I was thinking of applying epoxy to it, but it really wasn't worth the hassle. I don't know if this applies to the wheels the OP has, but it's worth taking a look inside.
