Caltrans cleared a bunch of homeless encampments in Berkeley forcing the inhabitants to scatter along the nearby trails. Got a flat and found new meaning to "Watch for the fork in the road".

I got a late start this morning and decided to see if the forest service roads beyond the Middle Fork Road were free of snow.

The pavement ends at about milepost 12 and I start to climb up a fairly rough forest service road.

The road is gated about 18 miles from the turnoff onto the Middle Fork Road. I ride around the gate and pedal to the bridge over Dingford Creek. This is my turn around point. The falls thundering loudly behind me as I take this picture.

Yesterday was a ride I call "The Day of the Dead". Left Oaks, PA on my Nishiki International (first ride on that one since last August). GREAT bike. Rode the Schuylkill River Trail east to Manayunk then 3/4 mile on Main Street. I swung right onto the rejuvenated Pencoyd Bridge then up the hill. Here's where the Dead comes in. After a short accent I turn into the West Laurel Hill Cemetery. West Laurel Hill does not mind cyclists quietly touring the grounds so I usually take the perimeter road counter clockwise thru the monuments and tombstones. Ever so quiet so I can hear if there are any 'bumps'. Out the west side to Bala Cynwyd Park (are you detecting a lot of Welsh names around here?). Skidder thru a quiet neighborhood to the top of the Cynwyd Heritage trail then a long coast all the way back to the SRT. But on this lovely warm spring day I stopped about halfway down that slope to eat my picnic (PBnJ and two carrots). Calm, warm, relaxing and quiet. Deathly quiet as on one side is West Laurel Hill Cemetery and on the other is Westminster Cemetery. And in days of yore this gulch was a rail line into industrial Manayunk so no one has ever lived there. Ergo - "the Day of the Dead". A very nice destination, eating lunch and watching folks going up and down the trail.

Back on the slope then connected to the SRT and west towards the car. Out of the ordinary (most of our weather comes from the west) I had an excellent tail wind going west. The bike went 5 to 6 mph faster in places than the trip east. When I returned to "the hairpin" at Oaks I rode the extra 4 mile round trip to Port Providence, just to pile on some miles. 47mi when I hung the bike back on the car. Great day and great to see so many folks out using the trails on a weekday.

Went for more doughnuts today. I do not like to visit the same place on consecutive trips. Four good shops within a 25 mile or less radius.
My brother in law wanted to go along and he's not retired so we went back to Woods via a shorter route. He's a carbonista. Guess who had to carry the coffee and mugs.
Jason is 25 years younger and strong. At least I kept him in sight.

Luck with the weather had actually held up this week, three of four days sofa saw some nice riding. Actually hit 90℉, but with the unusual 29% humidity it was as nice a day as you could want. Here are two pics from Tuesday, field is freshly planted for the spring and summer crop. This entire field and tow others larger were complete losses of cotton crops last year due to heavy rains in November and December. We ended 2018 at 125%+ of our average rainfall.

Just got back from a quick 16 mile round trip from South Philly to Falls Bridge via the SRT. Not as many runners on the trail as I thought there would be on a warm Saturday!

Country roads of Mt. Olive NC for the charity ride part of the NC Pickle Festival. Law (3speedslow) came up from Jacksonville and daughter Liz from Durham. After an all-night rain and threatening skies and a 60% rain forecast we were thankful to have a mostly dry ride, only 4 or 5 minutes of light drizzle when we all were expecting to be riding in full-on rain. We forgot to make a photo until we got home.

We managed to do our second tandem ride of the year today. 45.9 miles, very pleasant, Bedford to Heart Pond, the Bruce Freeman RT to Chelmsford, down to the south end, back to the pond, back to Bedford.

We met this guy, Alistair I think he said his name was, who'd rigged up a trailer for his kayak. Spent a few minutes talking bikes.



It was a good day.
