4th of July Ride - I wasn't able to get out until the afternoon, and did an easy-to-moderate effort 28mi cruise, with a stop for a cold Coke in Sierra Madre. Air quality is pretty mediocre, and I could feel it in my lungs. https://www.strava.com/activities/9389657950

Recently I have added a short route closer to home. It involves a punishing (for me) climb on Newport Ave. / Blvd. up to Skylark to cruise the main gravel path in Peters Canyon Regional Park. I need the lowest 31:34 ratio on my gravel bike for the stretch from Cowan Heights up to Highcliff Dr. bridge, and a 5 minute break under the shade of the bridge. Almost taken out by an MTB'er flying down a steep slope around a blind turn and veering all the way to my edge of the trail. Luckily, right before that, I had to stop and consult a sign on the trail to find my way. If I was 5 s earlier, I would already have been climbing that steep slope and he would have sent me to the hospital. (He did apologize as he flew past.)

planned hundo today but 4 mechanicals and 1 emergency bike shop visit. We opted for shorter route today. Off bike time almost equaled on bike time....

Bummer that your ride got interrupted, but stuff happens sometimes. Call it an easy day. 😉

One ride Sunday to my mother in laws for some menudo. It's been a while since I've had some so I figured I'd work up an appetite with the ~14 miler.

Earlier today just rode home from work and unfortunately I stared hearing a creaking noise coming from my Deda handlebars. Hopefully nothing serious.

34-miler around the hamlet of julian. taking in a few fave, socal roads: engineers, wynola and boulder creek roads.
a bit toasty and not acclimated just yet to summer temps. stopped a few times in the shade on the boulder creek/engineers
significant uphill to cool down/drop the heart rate. without fail, the biggie horseflies came calling so heart rate never dropped all that much.
still, gorgeous day and didn't see any other crazy cyclists out. auto traffic pretty minimal, esp on the 3 roads previously mentioned.

27-miler with the vast majority of those miles on orange county bike paths/road closed to vehicular traffic.
did stay in the crazy roadie game with death wish participation on both (especially the eastern portion) sides
of el toro road at the 5 fwy. late start and a little too hot for my current fitness level to safely hit cooks corner and
drop down live oak canyon rd/ride up trabuco canyon into rancho santa margarita and loop back around to laguna niguel
area/aliso/wood canyons starting point. it was foggy on the coast though. would always rather be baked than chilled.

26mi road ride. Easy laps around the Rose Bowl loop chatting with friends, plus 1 hot lap with the Tues/Thurs fast-guys/gals group ride. I wish I had time to do a few more.

Also…New Tire Day!

27 easy miles by myself down to Huntington Beach to visit with my riding buddy who was stuck at home watching the plumbers tear up his front yard. I ended up getting back home around 11am (on Wardlow and El Dorado Park) and it was already 90 degrees and it felt like it.

PSA: The SGRT was closed to bikes right around the electric plant in Seal Beach. Had to take a detour on 7th st. to Studebaker and then back to Westminister to the ditch again. I don't know what it was but they had someone standing there telling everyone to get off the trail at 7th St (while heading South).

A quick 22 before the heat comes today. Felt good the whole ride and a fellow rider asked if she can draft my wheel and of course I welcomed it bcuz she simply asked. Plenty of cyclist around these parts have zero manners.

Reaching our end point we chatted a bit and went our seperate ways. Great start to the morning.

I do not do well in temps above 90F so I started at 0400 for the La Habra Hgts -Whittier Hills loop.
More coyotes and even a raccoon than vehicles for the first three hours. Took it easy on the descents to miss the cottontails and skunks.
Something different, I'll be doing more early morning rides for the serenity.

To Dana Point for lunch, got my July's Century a Month completed. My buddies got two flats at same time frame, one tubeless wouldn't seal. the Other had valve core leaking. Another emergency bike stop, trying to find one that was open in Oceanside.

51-miler from sdsu area to ocean beach (ob), then along the bay and taking the ferry over to coronado. south of coronado along the silver strand and the loop northwards thru chula vista and national city back to the sdsu area. pretty toasty and humid everywhere except for the ocean beach area. a de facto beer ride w/o much beer. just happy to be out and was going for total exposure vs quality. a few efforts here and there but mostly just trying to hide the lack of fitness throughout whilst on the '85 pinarello. seemingly succeeded. again.

Love having that option to do a fun roll on a classic steel and enjoy the coastal scenes including a beer and pizza stop.
Been 100+ for the last month here in DFW and overdue for a checkout ...

31 miles. El Dorado Park to PCH and then down to Magnolia. I rode on the bike path as much as I could. I took all the time in the world. Just enjoying the cool ocean breeze. I rode so slow that when I got home my Garmin told me I rarely got out of Zone 2 (HR). It was a great day.

Yep. The 2 guys I regularly ride are old friends and we enjoy stopping and chewing the fat. On a 3 hour ride probably only 2 hours are actually spent riding. Best day ever.

I just got back from doing 6 days of riding up in Portland, Oregon. I borrowed my friend's bike travel case and took my bike on a flight. Weather was also quite hot there, so I did most my cycling in the morning. I did everything from road and off-road with my gravel bike. I even met up with a weekly ride group and hit the highest peak in Portland. FYI - Alaska Airlines is by far the best airline to fly with your bike. They waive the weight and size limit for sporting equipment, so I only had to pay the standard $30 baggage fee and it's free if you fly 1st or business class I believe. Maybe it's time to take my bike to Hawaii and/or Alaska!

Woke up early, and my motivation to ride didn’t wake up with me. I plopped on the couch with my dogs, watched the conclusion of today’s Tour stage, and dozed off for a bit. I finally found enough spirit to go for a short gravel bike ride (9mi), and paid for my lateness with 100deg temps and almost zero shade on the climb to Brown Saddle. My HR was unusually elevated, too, so I took it pretty moderate, and stopped in a few tiny shady patches to let my body calm/cool down. The descent revealed a little play in the headset. This afternoon, I took it apart, cleaned everything, and reassembled it. Seems okay now.
