Returning member.. have not been here in ages.

location : south Louisiana.
I’ve been cycling about 200 mi a week for the past year and a half. Just recently dropped my mileage down to about 150 miles per week- usually a bit more towards 165-170.

A few months ago I bought a new road bike (BMC Roadmachine Ultegra Did 2) , but have not been happy with it. It’s not nearly as upright as I had hoped and just a bit too stiff as well. I think I’ll be selling it for a steel framed endurance type bicycle. Or just stick to my old Caad9 til i can figure out a better endurance option. I’ve had it professionally fitted as upright as possible too.. so maybe it’s just the frame geometry thats not suitable for my body.

I’d offer the bike for sale here, but maybe my post count is not high enough.

I got the Roadmachine for a pretty low price, so I will sell it at a low price as well. Probably at the LBS on consignment.

one good thing that happened over the past year is I lost nearly 40 pounds (213 to 175) once I got into cycling (dropping sugar and processed foods too).

I’ve been doing a lot of group rides, but I find I’m more happier doing solo rides.. or with one or two others. I’m not sure why it is that I don’t like to do group rides but when I’m by myself, I seem to be happier and a bit free’r to stop and go as I please.. and ride as fast or slow as I feel like doing. Maybe I’m just too independent minded? Anyone else feel this way?

Im retired USN and recently retired from a civilian job in the federal system.

Any other south Louisiana riders here?

hi and thanks.. I’m 61, will be 62 in January. I’m not new to cycling.. I literally grew up with a bike attached to me lol. We rode bikes every day in those days. At about 19 I began doing lots of road biking til I was about 25 (When I joined the Navy). I hardly did any road biking again til after retirement from Navy (2007) and it was a bit sporadic.. but became very regular again in 2023.

I usually ride at anywhere between 16 and 17 mph by myself (and that depends on winds and weather) and usually 17 to 19 on group rides as well.

You are my brother! Retired USCG here and 1 year away from federal civilian retirement. I am in the NOLA area. I ride mostly solo as well and about the same pace as you. Also like you, we grew up on our bicycles. They represented independence and freedom to us and gave us our first experiences in travel. To this day, I still enjoy wanderlust.

Should I wait a bit before I break out my Navy jokes?

NOLA.. before I retired.. I was working for Corps of Engineers— New Orleans district.. but I worked out of Port Allen office. Spent a lot of time in NOLA tho.

also we lived in Slidell for quite a while last few years in the Navy and then after retirement.

man , you’re so right about bikes when we were kids. It was a type of freedom. My kids biked around the neighborhood quite a bit til high school.. but it kills me that my grandson (age 8) is still not on a bike. Very sad. I keep asking him to get on the bike. But seems no one is interested in bikes.
