Not Vintage , But Definitely Classic
Last year I purchased a Soma Stanyan frameset from Velomine when they had them on clearance , it sat in the box till last week when I dropped the frame off to have it prepped by my LBS . Last night I installed the headset and bottom bracket . Not done yet but it is getting there , I am bidding on a saddle for it now , and as soon as I get some money saved up I am gonna pay @gugie to make me one of his awesome decaleurs. So I still have a week or two before it will be done but I am totally getting excited by the prospect of riding this bike , I definitely will be riding it on the wine country tour this year ...

Here ya go , shot of the brakes.. I originally was going to use a set of VO dual pivot brakes but getting the tires past the pads was an issue , so i went with plan B and used the gran compe 610 brakes I have which were originally slated for my Grand Jubile . The Grand Jubile will now be wearing the VO brakes I suppose.

Last night I finished the build , this photo was taken while installing the chain , this morning I finished everything up and have run into a couple of problems. The SunXCD front derailleur will not shift properly no matter what I do , I have adjusted the angle moved it up and down , all to poor or no effect . So I will probably order an Ultegra FD-6700 to get this show on on the road .

I love the fat tires and the barcons.

I hope so as well or I will need a plan B for this build which will be a different crank. I spent quite a bit getting this one and want to use it but we will see what happens after I’ve obtained an FD-6700

Ok I had a Deore LX 7 / 8 speed front derailleur in my bin and installed it. The cage is too wide , but after squeezing it a little I was able to get good shifting , so I am thinking I will try to do one of two things . Find a 10 speed triple front derailleur or go forth with the Shimano Ultegra FD-6700 idea. Another problem I have identified is that SunXCD says this crankset is fine with a 113 to 118 mm bottom bracket but what I am seeing is that there is a slight amount misalignment in the chain line so I am considering a slightly longer bottom bracket or a spacer to shift the chain line slightly.

Always like them Stanyans -both iterations, Sweet build OP. I briefly had a Soma Smoothie that I built with Veloce 10 speed but sold it to (wait for it) fund other bike projects lol

The brakes you used are sublime! What size tires did you fit? I also got a Stanyan frame during the Velomine sale. Put 650B x 38 and fenders on mine.

I am using Panaracer Gravel King slicks in 700x38 the true size is 700x35 and it does fill up the front fork pretty good there is actually room for a 700x40 in the rear and SOMA is spot on when when they say 700x35 (actually 700x32/33 ) with fenders. As for the brakes thanks I like them as well , originally I was going to use the VO but the clearance was too tight the gran compe 610 are quite nice .

The Gran Compe 610’s really look the part. I didn’t realize fat 700’s would fit so cleanly. Hopefully the Stanyan makes a return to the lineup - I’m certain you’ve inspired others with your tasteful modern classic build. Please consider posting photos of the decaleur when installed.

I really need to rethink my position on newer drive trains, this 2 x10 shifted perfectly in every respect, it is very easy to keep your cadence up while shifting , The available gear range is really almost perfect . I need to head out of town and hit a few hills to try and use the bail out ring, but I was truly impressed with this 2 x 10 setup .
I was not as impressed with those orange VO pads, in short they suck
I had a nice little 10 mile ride with plenty of opportunities to stop thanks to Salem traffic lights on the way to the park , I was never inspired by the brake pads at any point. I will give them a little bit more time to burn in, however my opinion at this point is they might be orange, but they are NOT Koolstop pads.
Back the tires ... I purchased the Gravel Kings because they the more economical choice compared to the Compass "Rene Herse" Heine specials , and the Soma Shikoro tires, both of which are just rebranded Panaracers with a higher price point . These particular tires are actually lighter than the advertised weight of the equivalent Compass tires based on the reviews I read. Like other big tires , tire pressure is everything on these. 50 pounds is the sweet spot for me, your mileage may vary but OMG the ride was plush , fast and amazing .
Most interestingly was the difference for me in geometry compared to me daily driver, I ride a 56cm Surly LHT to work every day , and this is definitely more sporty, not as sport as the my Allez, but definitely more so than my Surly. I ended up having to raise the seatpost slightly above my standard adjustment ( the classic fist full of seat post). Not significantly but it is slightly higher than where it would normally be on the LHT or my Allez . The Technomic give me just about perfect height for the bars and I love those 52cm dirt drops , those bars will be going on more builds in the future . they have the exact same width as the 48CM Nitto Noodle up top with a tad more flare at the bottom.
I just need to deal with my rack situation and a decaleur / bag .

FWIW I really like the Shimano CX70 front derailleurs. I have one on my Mercian with a 50/34 road double, and also on my Riv with a 30/40/50 Sugino triple crank. Works great on both bikes.
I had the Microshift branded version of that FD for a while, and I thought it was kind of mediocre, but it did work. Sometimes parts just don't like each other. The rear mech was much better. Is that a 30/46 chainring setup?

@Salamandrine The rings are a 42 TA Pro Vis 5 outer ring and a 28 TA Pro Vis 5 inner . I almost went with bigger on both ends but decided against it , on another wholly related note I purchased a 105 triple 10 speed front derailleur because I decided should I choose to add a third ring later this gives me that option . I can actually buy a whole different set of rings just unbolt these and swap. I love the modular nature of TA style cranks.

I would have built mine with fat 700’s if I had known they fit so well. A nice looking bike that will be responsive but comfy to ride. The long stem is calling to me...
I used Velocity Atlas rims and Pari-Moto 650B tires. Took it for the first outside ride yesterday (15km), so we’re still getting used to each other. No parts were left behind on the rail trail which is a bonus for my first ever build. I’ll post some pictures once I hit 10.
