On Saturday I stumbled into a new addition of the SLR trail that connects S14 (terminus of N. Santa Fe Ave., immediately west of Guajome Park) and Tyler Street.
It has not yet been opened, but the trail does indeed go through, and had beautiful fresh new asphalt and curvy little hills.

How long is the addition?

Not long, maybe a mile or less. It's officially open now.

Not sure what the advantage is unless there are future plans to join it with N. River Rd. Maybe it's just another piece of a big puzzle.

The advantage for me is I don't have to travel on 76 from N Santa Fe to College. Hopefully they will continue to expand it.

Ygduf (visiting from NorCal) and I just rode it again on Saturday and there is definitely going to be an extension soon. There was a cleared path leading straight from it continuing East.

It's going to stay on the south side of the river which isn't bad if they can get it to Old River Rd. Might take years though.

A mile gained is a longer ride.

Have to come down and try it. Last TrailLink review was in 2007 and I see there is a new park going in (or gone in) at the upper end. Probably time to update the survey.

And it's an interesting mile too! Plenty of curves and little hills.
It's going to be pretty sweet when our choice of thoroughfares doesn't consist of a) The 76 or b) Holly Lane (aka Crystal Meth Ct.)

Really? I don't think I've ever looked at the houses; just figured that everybody there was in the ag business.

Probably a good tactic not to look interested in what goes on there.
Just kidding. It's probably just a wholesome ag neighborhood, but the asphalt through there is about as smooth as coffeecake.It's like a paper mache geography project of the Himalayas, and North River Road afterward always makes me feel kinda claustrophobic.

I spoke to someone today that said that the trail will ultimately end at i-15. It will take years and face a lot of hurdles but that's the plan.

That's why I don't look at the houses - I'm concentrating on not eating ****.

That is great news. Who's your source? I don't need to know their name & address, just curious about their position, or who they know.

I recall reading something similar awhile back, NC Times I think. I believe it is part of a SANDAG regional plan since it would extend out of Oceanside. One of the big hurdles is that they will be running into private property issues once they start moving east of Melrose. Don't quote me though

Thanks for the info. As much as I'd love to have a dedicated bike path from the 15 to the sea, I wouldn't want it at the expense of someone's personal property.

We have a similar situation with Poinsettia Road near my home. I don't mind taking the detour on Cassia though.

They plan to lead it around that housing development, down along the rim of the bottoms there and up to where Via Mancos makes that squiggle into Cty Hwy 14. There is to be a trail head there. You can see the trace on Google Earth. Trail should be already paved up to the city lot on Andrew Jackson St. From there the options were - on street down to the other city lot on Tyler St. or around the development on the outside.
