I am considering going tubeless with 700/38 Schawlbe Almotions (tubeless version) on Dyad rims. I'm a bit confused about the sealant (I was considering standard Joe's Sealant) but have seen it suggested that this is only intended for large "low pressure" mtb tires. I expect to be running at 80psi or lower. Does that seem like a viable setup?


BTW, I was persuaded to go with the Almotions based on a review at Bicycle Rolling Resistance | Rolling Resistance Tests which scientifically tests rolling resistance of many tires.

There's a number of sealants out suitable for Road Tubeless. Stan's, Orange Seal, Caffelatex each has advantages. You can read reviews of them.

The main problem is that the Dyad isn't a tubeless ready rim, which is kind of an issue at the higher road pressures. More prone to the bead dislodging, burping, etc.

"Standard Joe's sealant" -- I assume you mean Stan's sealant? That's the most standard one.

What gsa said about Dyads not being tubeless-ready, I expect at 80psi that would be pushing your luck.

But as I have Dyads on my commuter, if you try it please come back and tell us how it goes, I'd love to know if I have the option to go tubeless.

Joe's has a standard 'super' version and pricier 'Racer's' version.

I just mounted the first one. A bit messy (do it outside on the lawn) but overall easy-peasy though I had to visit my neighbourhood tire shop to get it blown onto the rim. Putting on the 22mm rim tape without bubbles (two layers) took a bit of patience and elbow grease and a careful cleaning of the rim interior with alcohol. Anyhow, it's mounted and inflated to 65 psi. Will test tomorrow and let you know how it goes.

Joe.. formally known as "Stan's friend Joe." apparently, for unknown reasons , they've had a falling out.

but, 80psi on a 38mm wide tire. isn't that a bit much? not that it's really any of my business...

BTW, i've used Stan's sealant to good effect on my Tufo 20mm tubless tubular tires, that i run at about 90PSI.

I run 70psi in 700x32 tubeless-- no way you're going to need 80psi in a 700x38. More like 40psi.

I carry a heavy load and have always run on the high side. Maybe tubeless will let me revisit that. Btw, today's ride went well. Time to finish the job. It feels strange to mount a tire without a tube!
