Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Torrential rains here today, so the Cubbies game got moved from 1-ish to 6:10pm. And there's a slight chance that might get rained out too.

Funny you would mention Andalucia as was earlier watching videos of the fair in Seville. It is an opportunity for people to show off their horses and play dressup. Dressing up is fine but I don't see why it is necessary to wear chaps in town. On the other hand, the ladies look fine with flowers in their hair.

We were in Seville 2 years ago. Loved it. Great city. Too hot in July and August though.

Cycling content: there is a stage race in southern Spain this week. The vuelta de Andalucía. Es bueno. Gotta go watch the highlights of today’s stage on GCN.

I know you'd love a modern bike. I just know it.
I have two Columbus SL, a Tange Prestige, a Tange 1 and a couple lesser bikes which are no less fun to ride. With the tires we have today, I can be assured that anything more modern would undoubtably be no better a rider than what I have now. Big Marketing would be the only winner. I have a shop full of tools and spare parts, and I find working on bikes as enjoyable as riding them. I see no logical reason to ride a modern bike. And, in a thousand years, when all my bikes have rusted away, there will be mountains of plastic bikes clogging the highways, byways and waterways.

Yeah, we know. We're just glad you're here to remind us daily of our less than primitive ways.

Speaking of riding modern bikes, wow does the Cervelo feel markedly different than the Domane. I didn't exactly step on it during my 4 block mosey, but it definitely feels more responsive. I'll have to pay attention to it for the first few rides.

I did wear the nitrile gloves under my winter gloves, but honestly can’t say if they made much of a difference. Next time maybe I will wear only on one hand so I can do a side-by-side comparison.
Have you tried Playtex Living Gloves? I used them on my Spring tour last year. Not as tight-fitting as nitrile. And, so flexible you can pick up a thin dime.

After tomorrow's commute, I will have garnered 300 km my first week back on the bike. I did't realize how much I missed it.

Today is my 30th birthday, and I got out for 36 miles.

Nice ride, but I could have done without the last 10 mile slog into a 15mph headwind. Oh well.

Recovery beer and fried chicken have been consumed. Dinner with the folks and my wife tonight.

Cheers!

My academic arch nemesis is from Valencia and I took the family over for a working visit, back when we were big pals and he had gotten a job at the university. Nice town and it was hot, but breezy, in July and we spent a lot of time on the beach. Of course, the “visiting professorship” and the promised expense check never materialized, but hey, that’s how he rolled.

He recently lost all his NIH funding and his hugely prestigious position at an Ivy League institution for sexual improprieties, but, unfortunately, no one will ever get him on the scientific fraud.

It snows in parts of Andalucia. There was snow on the hillsides surrounding Cazzorla when I was touring the territory.

Yeah pushing that 4x8' sheet of plywood into a headwind has gotta hurt!

Sewups are great. Well, not here in PHX, but up north I loved riding them.
