Plus one on Geelage's advice. Lung trauma and adhesions can come back to make your old age a misery.

Well either I’m feeling better or loaded on pain meds or somewhere in between but.......

I couldn’t stand looking at that beautiful Pug in its damaged condition so I went to my storage area and low and behold there was a slightly newer version Mavic front wheel that cosmetically looked virtually identical to the smashed up vintage wheel!
I mounted the tire and a new tube on the new wheel and mounted it on the Pug, straightened out the handlebars and put the chain back on the chainring.
Everything seems to be ok other than it clearly needs to be checked out as to why it did what it did. Now I have a new conversation piece for our lanai 🤣

Get well soon! People who tend to recover faster in general are physically active people.

Here is to the in house nursing staff... , I have one as well, but when I had my accident, she was on a cruise with her Mom, so all I had was my son, which as it were, he was sorely lacking in nursing skills and compassion skills of a nurse....

Heal quickly, I ended up having 5 surgeries.

Plus 2 from my experience just 35 weeks ago this past Monday when a 150+ pound wild pig decided to run into me. Seems many here scoff at broken ribs and simply "man up" but the ER x-rays showed 2 cracked, a punctured lung AND cracked scapula.

Heal quickly.

Glad to hear that the bike is in good shape and lucky you have an almost identical spare wheel. I hope you recover quickly and fully.

Tomm,

I crashed badly in late march of last year. I shattered my wrist in the fall. Plates, screws...you get the picture. I'm still trying to get the full range of motion back in my wrist. It's about 80% there. Stick with it and may you heal quickly!

I will add my sympathy to you as well with this cautionary note. Two months ago I went down and landed on the outside of one hand; small and next finger were stunned, but no cuts and straight. I John Wayne'd it and didn't get an ex-ray. Now I can't curl my pinky and it still lites up when banged. It reminds me of a "frozen" shoulder which I avoided with physical therapy. You might guess what I would do differently now given the chance. I've had ribs and I know they are not fingers or shoulders, just saying,,,,Good luck!

I've seen antique high-wheel bikes with pretzeled front wheels, and amazingly the owner just kind of jumped on it in the right place and it snapped right back into place. It may have had a different spoke lacing pattern though. You probably won't feel like trying that for a while.

Crack of the brazing where the right-side seat stay meets the seat lug? That would make your chain jump....
Probably just a shadow I'm seeing there in your picture.

I'm glad that you'll be okay. Ditto in the advice to listen to your wife.

I wonder whether the rim can be saved. Maybe. De-stringing that wheel and building with new spokes and nipples would be good recovery therapy, wouldn't it?
