I would agree ... You don't want to upset the motorists ... You don't stand a chance against an angry, outraged, motorist with a violent display of road rage ... !!!

I might get/make a sign with something like, "Green All The Way!" or "I'm A Greeny," or something similar.

Our trike tour up the east side of Vancouver Island. Took us 5days, Nanimo to Campbell River, then Quadra Is.. Cortez Is. then over to Lund by watertaxi. The route down the Sunshine Coast was beautiful, and the residents always helpful.....gotta go there again soon

Another trike tour went to the Icefields Parkway, between Lake Louise and Jasper. While being a short distance, we did it in 3 days, the scenery made up for distance. i'd love to go back there but for longer. Met 2 trikers from Austrailia
husband and wife team. Going to cross North America from Alaska on.

Mike Melton touring bike

Attached are pictures of my "new" refurbished 1981 Mike Melton touring bike outfitted for light credit-card touring. Mike Melton is better known for designing and building the custom race bikes that the US Olympic Team used in 1984 and 1988. He went to work for Huffy for the Olympic effort. This frameset was probably built in South Carolina before he moved to Ohio.

According to the previous owner it is constructed of double butted Reynolds 531 tubing with Cinelli lugs and Campy long 1010 dropouts and was professional refinished using Spies Heckler paints and Melton Decals from CycleArt. Although it has 126mm horizontal drops, it easily accommodates a 130mm wheel built with a 36 hole 105 hub, 2.0 DT spokes and Synergy asymmetrical rear rim. The front wheel uses a 36 spoke Ultegra hub and Dyad rim, both wheels shod with Ruffy Tuffy 28mm tires. Fitting the SKS fenders was a challange and the rear still needs work. I started out with Tektro 538 standard reach brakes but had to substitute the Shimano long reach in the rear for clearance. Other key components are the Sugino R600 triple crank (50-36-24), XT rear der, 105 front der, Nitto stem, Nitto Noddle bars, vintage Campy headset and seat post, Tektro R200 levers, Nitto rack and Brooks B17 saddle.

The panniers are Arkel GT-18's which although normally are used up front, accommodate 2200 cu inches and are perfect for credit card touring. The handlebar bag is also Arkel and is mounted lower with the help of an intermediate 80mm stem. I'd like to find a 60 or 70 mm silver 1" stem to replace the black CODA if anyone has one for sale.

I have my Cross Check in somewhat of a touring mode. My kids and wife got me some goodies for Christmas that I have put on. The only thing I really need from this point is a set of Sport Packer Plus panniers with Tubus rack for the front. But I think I will ride it this way for a while









Do any of you see any weak points in my set-up? BTW, I do have a black Ortlieb rack pack that is not in the photos. What is the best way to put it on securely?

change nothing ,your set up is great.what gps is that you have do you find it good for touring.

It is a Gamin Edge 205....I did not need the cadence feature of the 305 and saved a little money. It is good for tracking miles, speed, routes, and just about anything that I need to track. I like it alot and ride with it always.

Lincoln, you asked for opinions, mine is that weight on the front end is better located lower and closer to the head tube. Either with low riders and panniers or a front rack with panniers or gear on the rack. Just an opinion.

I intend to get a Tubus front with Ortlieb Sport Packers....just gotta get the $...I have seen many pics of many bikes set up similar to mine so for now I will ride it that way. But just until I get the money for the rest

there are more affordable options that will work just as well. have you tried touring with the stuff you have? or have you just been riding about with your panniers empty? after doing a few overnighters or longer trips, you may find that front panniers aren't necessary. or, that you want to try something different.

Boh, I actually will be doing a small 200 mile mini-tour shortly in which I will use what I have and see how it goes. If all goes well I may put off getting the front rack and panniers until I start the really long distance tours when they would make more sense. I am just getting into this and am not really sure what I will need. I will make adjustments as things pop up and hopefully end up with, what for me will be, the perfect touring set-up. I have had people telling me to go to a triple front, MTB rear cassette and derailleur, go with front rack and panniers, go with a trailer and ditch the racks and panniers, buy another bike like an LHT, and all kinds of other advice, which if I followed would leave me broke and destitute I think, for now, I will just run what I brung...if it ain't right I can always change my setup

i did a 400 mile trip this winter along the VA/NC boarder with bulky winter stuff and a zero degree bag. i only used mid sized rear panniers. i think they're axiom champlains. maybe 60 bucks for the panniers and 20 for the rear rack? i think the rack is an axiom journey. i have front panniers, and a low rider rack, but i cant imagine having to carry enough stuff to warrant using them on a tour.
