Rain isn't so bad. Just add some soap near the end of the ride and you will be showered when you arrive

Just ride an E-Bike... and consider it as a quick charge

I commuted in Missouri for a few years. Usually the summer thunder storms would blow past quickly, and the ground would dry quickly afterwards.

A quick up date. I've started ignoring the forecast and had many wonderful commutes. I did get caught in one really bad down pour, and it wasn't that bad. I didn't take the long way home that day, which was probably for the best. Today it was suppose to thunderstorm on both the way to work and the way home and it did neither. Now if I can just get past my concerns over black ice.

When I used to ride my bike to work before I retired I would say, "all I need is an hour of not raining a day--just a half hour in the morning to make it to work and a half hour coming home". It usually worked out well if imperfectly, but I would draw the line at hard rain and thunderstorms if it came to it--just not worth the risk because so often for those who things turn out badly they never thought it would happen to them.

Having dry shoes was more of a bonus in my mind!

I do have a rain cape but it slows you down a bit and you can get buffeted around by wind, but I do bring it sometimes. I just didn't think of it that day. It doesn't protect the shoes much (as tandempower also mentioned).
As you know, living in the Great Lakes region, we never know when a sudden squall will come up. It can be a beautiful day, then with no warning it will start raining so hard that you literally can't see across the street. Then ten minutes later the sun will be shining again.

There's not much you can do about this, besides driving a car (boo!). When lucky, you might be near a bridge or awning for shelter. But most often, you just get drenched, then dry off quickly after the sun comes back out.

I prefer overall to be IN the weather even at the risk of uncomfortable periods. It's a richer experience. You don't need to be unsafe or foolish. But you can be too cautious for your own "good" too. 100% chance of rain with a big system crossing the u.s, not a good idea. OTOH a 60% chance of showers, well that's a 40% chance it won't rain at all. And probably a good chance you can avoid it completely. And if you can't oh well.

I seem to have a magic touch with rain. I see it looking inevitable on the radar. Then it just goes away or actually divides and goes around me. My favorite is when I keep showing up for the wet road, but because the rain just left. That's when fenders are nice. No wet back and mud slinging

My kids would call that a dad joke. Maybe if you were grilling it outside.
