Just updated after November trip for Asia trip in two weeks.

Wheelset: 3T Discus C35 Pro 24h F&R ---> Notubes Grail rims, Dt 350 hubs w/12mm thru-axle adpts, and 32 cx-rays spokes front and rear ( 3T was heavy and I didn't like the internal nipples)
Saddle: S-works Toupe 142 to Pro Stealth Carbon 142 (Pro felt better)
Cassette: 12-28 to 11-34T (I need 23 gear inches in asia)
Bartape: Fabric Silicone to Pro Digital Carbon (Silicone is too sticky for me)

And another addition to the setup is Garmin 1030. I ditched my computers about 8 years ago because I was too distracted to the data. Now that I don't have that habit, I want to keep some data from my tour and navigation.

Salsa Touring front panniers, Salsa Revelate frame bag, and modified Blackburn Outpost seat bag for my luggage.

Everything loaded except for my Gopro and Gopro Grip, 21.7kg(47.84lbs)

Interesting tires, what are those? They look like generic ones from the road bikes I saw in the 80s but somehow I doubt that's the case

Sure, the unloaded front bag looks funny, and I'm looking for some panniers/trunk bag, but it's getting there. I'll be lowering the bag about 8" so I can use a Garmin Varia GPS/Light combo. And then fenders, and other stuff, and a CB radio, and a dash-mounted Hawaiian lady, and streamers.... etc....

Well, this is unique. BBassett, you asked a question about a message I posted 14 years ago!

I am not sure how to answer. I still don't carry camping equipment when I tour, and I continue to "camp out" in hotels and B+Bs. My longest tour has been about three weeks although most are two days to a week.

Probably the closest thing to a do it all bike I have seen... bonus for me is we have a state park about 20 miles from my home with pretty mellow single track... miles of it but a little chill for a full on mountain bike, would be really cool to ride to the park, hit the trails, camp for the night and head home sometime the next day... mini trips

I'm really happy with mine (2017 model). Rides gravel, old 4x4 two track, etc well. Decent on the pavement (I'm using a single set of wheels & tires for all rides) although if I was on pavement more I might have a separate wheelset for that. I think some of the 2018 models might be 1x12 (mine is 2x11). That would be a nice improvement.

So I'm down to a 2 bike stable (at least the "active" stable is two bikes...). The Cutthroat for gravel, moderate jeep roads, etc. Then a Salsa Mukluk (usually with 27.5+ tires) for softer / rougher stuff. Those are the perfect combination for me right now.

Okay, enough of this modern crap. Let's see how folks used to tour. I found a pic from my '74 tour in Europe with my buddy Sherman. He's on the left with his Raleigh Grand Prix and REI gear, while I'm on the right with my Batavus and Cannondale bags. White spots on pic are damage to the print.

Great shot. What's interesting to me is that while the stuff is different, it doesn't look at that different to my first trip in 89 I think. 15 years later but the panniers were a bit better, but not much else different.
And in the end, although I'm on tour right now with water proof panniers (but have since 93) and disc brakes, it's still bags attached on a bike and with so much finite space.
And most importantly, the fun and freedom is the same.

Thanks. We'd survived the first month together and thought we were badasses. Continued the trip for a couple more months.

Here's a shot taken five years later in Austria on a different trip. Same bike with different wheels, different fenders, different rack and bags and lower gearing but still no triple. Always room for improvement.

That photo makes me think of a teacher at my high school, never had him as a teacher, but he did the av audio visual club that I was in. Beard etc like you, same years late 70s, he did bike trips and always had his bike in his room, planted the seed im sure for me for bike trips.
So thanks to you hippy types here I am today.

Of course, ie, I should know better. Hip cats/ Ginsberg/ I just went for a walk in the city I am in, went into a book store and there was a Spanish version of Howl on the shelf, haven't read it in at least 30 years, but it was funny to see it.

And I'd like to think I'm being a bad example to young kids too, hope so anyway.
