Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

lets talk cable housing ends

i'm assembling a new bike and i'm unhappy with the cable ends provided by Jagwire. seriously - what kind of problem is the Point of Power end trying to solve?
https://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...aL._SY300_.jpg

at first i thought i'd just pick up open end caps. you know, the one before there were options. but they also come in lined - Lined End Caps | Jagwire and sealed - Sealed End Caps | Jagwire

which one to get??

(fwiw, this is for a road bike. i don't take it through the mud but rain is very clever at attracting city grit.)

Those are ferrules, not end caps. End caps are the little aluminum caps that keep the wires from fraying (although technically you could say those are ferrules too). The POP ferrules are excellent and work great. I haven't been able to find anything better.

I hate the POP things - they don't fit in my brakes and the cable rocks around. I recycled ones from a previous cable job instead.

As for sealed / lined - I got some of each with my last cable kit and I used them where it said to use them and I don't recall what the circumstances were. Don't over think it.

is it a glorified stepped ferrule we're talking about for brake calipers?

Ah ferrules, misunderstood and under appreciated.

All ferrules are not created equal. Good ferrules have pinch points inside to secure and seal the housing. They also have o-rings to seal the inner wires. Lastly, they have a brass insert in the base to stop the wires in the housing from splitting the ferrules, jamming into the shifter or decreasing brake performance.

To help seat the ferrules in the cable stops or barrel adjusters have external rinpbs or crush zones so that they fit, seat and expand, locking themselves in place.

With newer 10spd or 11spd systems cables and housings are more impactful on performance than ever.
