Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

which cassette for SRAM Force 22 setup? Force, Rival, or Ultegra?

I'm in the market for a new cassette for my SRAM Force 22 bike. My concerns are longevity, shifting performance, good price. On 10 speed cassettes i found that ultegra was often the best value.

has anyone done the legwork on this? any conclusions?

If weight is not a concern, mid-range or even lower makes perfect sense. Choose the brand based on who offers the exact cogs you want. For example I would be looking for 12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,21,23,26. It is hard to find that from SRAM so I would probably go Ultegra or 105 if they offer it.

Shimano offers 12-25, 11-23, 11-25(and many others) . I use 12-25t cassettes because I like the single tooth gaps between gear ratios.

5800 and 6800 cassettes are nearly identical, but 6800 cassettes use an alloy lockring. Both cassettes are available for $28-$45 out of the UK shops.

Sure, 12-25 would be okay for me too.

I've been using 11-28t. i'm more opinionated about the large end than the small end.

Funny. I only care about the middle, but the large and small ends have to be right for the middle to be right...if you know what I mean.

Same here. 11t is useless for me, and 39x25 is plenty for 99% of the roads I encounter. I'm not going to gear my bike for 1% of my riding.

I've found that Ultegra cassettes and chains perform better than Sram Force and Rival. I like Red chains and cassettes, but they are pricey.

Don't waste your time on a matching chain. KMC for the win.

as best i can tell kmc no longer has the price advantage when it comes to 11 speed. 10 speed, sure, at least last i looked.

I noticed the other day that there's now a 14-28T Ultegra cassette (11 speed). I'm very interested in trying this out.

At $15-$25 for a 5800 or 6800 chain from Merlin Cycles, how much could really be saved with a KMC chain?

It's never been the money for me. I adopted KMC to quiet my older Red drivetrain and for the master link.
