the forecast has only gotten worse since yesterday...
As such, I'm hereby changing the date from Saturday to Sunday, Sept 13. Same start time... 8:30 to show up and prep, and 9am to get on the road.
I contacted local fellows Ken and Jack, and Ken says he can't make it on Sunday. Haven't heard from Jack yet.

I think Julian is opting to not ride due to covid concerns, which is certainly a disappointment... he recently picked up a Jim Merz frame and I wanted to get a look at it!
Anyway.... the plan is now for Sunday. It'll be nice to see dry roads and blue skies again!

Showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 1pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. High near 74. South southeast wind around 9 mph becoming west southwest in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

my ride report.....
The weather on Saturday was pretty awful, so it was delayed until today, Sunday. Springing this sort of change on people at the last minute is never good, so I wasn't really expecting many folks to attend. To my surprise, I had the pleasure of seeing six riders roll up this morning!
The first were Julian and Bob, both from the Bloomington area. Bob brought his KHS Gran Sport, a fine Japanese bike, looking good with the black paint and red cabling.
Julian brought a recent acquisition... a Bruce Gordon touring bike! Julian has a good eye for bikes, and think he's done very well with this one!

the previous owner did a rather novel modification to the brake levers to create a bit of an aero routing...

Bernie, aka 76SLT here at Bike Forums, has also had some fortune finding cool bikes! One of these is his 1971 Raleigh Competition. This is an unusual variation for those of us more familiar with the black Competitions from the mid to late 70's. This one is painted in the white/lagoon blue scheme more common to the Gran Sport. It also has Nervex Pro lugs, which is also uncommon for the Competition.
I won't mention what he paid for the bike... the envy may just kill you.
a shot from the left side... the white saddlebag is a great touch!
the left chain stay and crank & pedal. How long did Raleigh put the model name on the chainstay?? My '74 International has the "Raleigh" text there. The Stronglight 93 crank is one of my favorites. The Atom pedals are looking good too.
a look at the Maillard 700 hubs. The foil decal is a fun detail.
a shot from the right side, to satisfy all of the readers shouting "You have to show the bike from the drive side!!". Well, the Stronglight crank is just gorgeous, so it's certainly the best perspective of the bike.

A new rider for this year is John, a rider from the outer edges of the Peoria area. I ran into him last year when he was riding a shiny steel Colnago at the bike club's invitational ride. We had a good chat then and I did my best to recruit him to my vintage ride. Glad that he could attend!
Today John brought nice Specialized Allez with some modern-ish parts and a custom paint job. John mentioned that the paint scheme was based around the Mavic wheels, so it's all black and yellow. IIRC, pin striping was done by a local fellow who usually does cars & motorcycles (but my memory might be lousy). Pretty nicely done, and definitely not the usual theme that I see for vintage bikes. Very fun!

John, Bob, and Julian on one of the many small paved roads that are typical of the area. With nearly no traffic, they make life pretty easy for cyclists.
Julian, Bob and Brian, dealing with the moderate headwinds on the way to Tanner's Orchard. The north winds did keep things pretty cool and pleasant, so I didn't mind.
Brian and Julian in front, and Bob and John in back. They are heading east on North Valley road, only a mile or so from Tanner's.
I haven't shown Brian's Bianchi so far, so here's a shot (albeit not much of a shot)...
finally, the whole point of the ride! Baked goods!
I had an apple fritter last time I was here, so I went with two donuts.

I grew up in eastern Iowa, and only the larger country roads were paved. The smaller roads were all gravel, resulting in a heavy coating of dust on the cars and trucks using the road (not to mention the washboard sections, etc.). By comparison, this section of Illinois is cycling heaven!

Steve, you certainly hosted a great ride. That area is really pretty for bicycling. It was great seeing some guys again and meeting new ones too. I wish I could have rode longer with you all, but I just wasn't up for it yesterday. I need more practice, so I guess I'll have to go ride some more.

Glad to hear that you plan to attend! Now I just have to cross a few more fingers and hope the weather doesn't end up nasty.
Also glad that you've gotten the 'dale that you were hoping for... or is this in addition to the 'dale you mentioned last year?? ...and I'm guessing that Mark was Mr. Padesky? Good heavens... I've known most of these folks since coming to Peoria in the mid 90's. The bike world here does seem small, but I'm still amazed to at what I learn. Bushwacker had a "show off your vintage bike" day a couple of years ago, and one fellow had Mino Denti tandem (whoever heard of Italian tandems?) and a Pegoretti....
It's just amazing what shows up when you ask people to drag cool bikes out of their garages!

okay, the weather has cooled off a bit and the wind was out of the north, so it's a good time to make a run up to Tanner's again and check on the condition of the roads, health conditions at Tanner's, and ensure that the donuts are still good.
On the way to Tanner's, traffic slowed down quite a bit. Early on a Saturday morning, it's odd just to have traffic, much less for it to be slow. Turned out that it was a procession of folks taking their vintage tractors out for a cruise! How nice to see them gather as a group of enthusiasts and have a bit of fun!
I rode my Raleigh Team, which is always a treat! Such a cool bike, and it has been treated to some minor weight weenie details. The titanium Phil BB is hidden and the Stronglight A9 headset is subtle, but the Hi-E front hub and skewer are obvious attempts to drop a few grams.
a bit of local scenery, of sorts. This barn is a bit of a classic too, but is in need of a bit of love (and paint).
Tanner's Orchard seems to be busy, which is encouraging. Their big season is Halloween, but they get a lot of traffic even in August. The bakery is still cranking out the donuts, and they are still a great indulgence in the middle of a bike ride!
