My SBDU pick-up - Lots of history to undo
I have been on the hunt for a legitimate Raleigh SBDU Team Pro for years now and after a few disappointing Ebay near misses, finally settled on this guy. SB4484 is essentially a one owner (the pass through guy never rode it or put a wrench on it) unrestored 1981 753 tubed bike originally sold through Michael's Cyclery. I won't blast the rider's name here because I don't have his permission, but I do have a couple of pics of him on this thing in the early 80's. I am going to try and put this bike back to as close to the pictures as possible. Very excited to get that bar tape off!

Sure does. I’ve stayed at that hotel a handful of times. Fun downtown area.

I love that you can see how this bike evolved over time as the owner kept riding it. It's cool that you have the current build documented with that pic. Call me a sap, but it's a significant (but maybe fashionably questionable ) part of that bikes history.
Are you going to just replace parts and keep the finish and decals as-is?

There is a mini-set of Campagnolo Veloce 2x10 in the C&V For Sale which would be a very cost effective fit-up for this nice frame!
I don't know the OEM equip for these Raleighs, but that group if it fits will give very satisfactory service. I've had that stuff on my early 1980s Mondonico for about 12 years.

Seeing that Micheal's Cyclery sticker on the seat tube gives me warm fuzzy feelings too. I used to go to school at Iowa State in Ames, Iowa, where Micheal's was located. I was always amazed that so many great American racers were part of the Skunk River Cyclists based at Micheal's.
just for fun... a shot of an SRC rider at the front during the crit at the Iron Horse Classic in 1982...

Very Nice. I have SB4548. Unfortunately, not in as relatively nice condition as yours appears. Is that a 54 as well?
My frame has severe rust issues. I'm debating whether or not to try to restore it and this is inspirational.

It's actually a 52.5 . It's actually too small for me, but that won't stop me from riding it!

fwiw - I have SB1092, and although I haven't had the rear "cold set", the 753 tubing tolerates a 9 speed in the rear.
Great to have one with a traceable history. From what I gather, mine was one in England, and went to British Columbia and got partway through a repaint before it came to me. Open to any info anyone might have about it.

I am going to try to put it back as close to it was when new. I am going to leave everything that wasn't replaced as is. There are a few spots on the frame that have been touched up. I think I may remove that as well. Interesting thing, this thing has Superbe Brakes and the Jersey sponsor was Suntour. Shifter is Campy, as is the Crankset. Wonder about the original RD...
Looking at the race photos, the silhouette of the RD makes me think it is one of the first gen Huret Success mechs. with the titanium knuckles.

interesting! While the livery decals are no longer on the forks, I just realized that the left fork also used to say "Suntour". Would it make sense that the sponsor's full group wouldn't be mandatory? I agree that it looks a bit larger than the Supurbe unit though...

Super easy. There are sellers on eBay offering 1'x1' sections (and if you can't find 651, the thinner 751 will work). Order gloss black, Light Red, and Signal Yellow. Cut into roughly 6" long strips; the black at 1", the red at 0.66", and the yellow at 0.33". Wrap with the black first, followed by red, then yellow.
This is what a wrap of Oracal 751 red looks like:

I would have figured a Superbe Pro, or Cyclone.

Any recommendations on appropriate vintage look black bar tape? I used white NOS Cinelli for the Levi's Landshark, but it is really delicate, and wouldn't be good for a real rider.

"Suntour" on the right fork leg, Huret at the back?
I agree with you - With Suntour sponsership you'd expect to see their products on the bike, but that RD doesn't look at like a Suntour to me. Those triangular knuckles are pretty unique to the 70s - 80s Huret derailleurs like the Challenger, Success and Duopar. The Success is very light, sturdy, and shifts positively - maybe it is the mech that the rider trusted. And perhaps Suntour was happy enough that it wasn't a Shimano or Campy. I doubt they (or anybody) perceived Huret as much of a competitor by that time.

Interesting. That seems like a bit too crazy for me to want to put back to original! The only Suntour components are the Superbe Brakes. I am guessing I should just do it right and refit with Campy Record, as most would have had in this era.

Your call, certainly. I don't think there is any financial incentive to go with the Huret. Because they are less common they seem to sell for similar amounts as would a Campy NR rear derailleur. And you can't beat the Campy for longevity.

By comparison, Record has been done to death. Given that this SBDU was obviously equipped with a Success at some point in its life, it'd be a fun homage to the past too. It's all up to @La Brea Bike, but I wouldn't talk him out of the Success...
