Vintage Pinarello identification-help?

Hi!

Can anybody help me inedtify that Pinarello? Too bad it has shimano 105, not original campagnolo, but i will replace it if i buy it. but it is my size, and i wonder wich model is? Because i am willing to restore it with original parts, if i get it cheap.

I think it's a Catena Lusso circa '85.

+ One bottle mount suggests pre-'87.
+ One chrome chain stay could be several models, but lack of GPT on seat stay caps suggests Catena Lusso
+ According to the '85 catalog, Catena Lusso came in 'Blue Jolly' colour
+ Catena Lusso came with Triomphe components - the FD could be original!
+ Dropouts match the '85 Catena Lusso catalog image
- Catena Lusso usually had braze-on FD
/ Original decals are long gone (surprise!)...looks like the paint is going the same way.
/ Serial SS 70 is interesting, for that period I would expect three digits following the double letter. Still, it's not the '82 format or the '87 format.
/ Is the fork original? Is there GPT on the crown?
/ The curved A in Pinarello on the BB shell usually suggests a later model (>87) but this is the second pre-'87 Pinarello I've seen with that, so maybe they were using it for some time.
/ Is the drive side chainstay chrome or blue? It looks different across the pictures.

I think chainstay was chrome, but they painted it because o the rust

What about Dolomite which have shimano 105 6-speed? Looks like that one... https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...tion-help.html

There's a few things that tell me it's unlikely.
- The Dolomite came out in '87. By that time they realised cyclists prefer dual bottle mounts. If I'm seeing your pictures clearly, there's only the one bottle mount.
- Pump pegs were introduced on Pinarellos in '87. Yours doesn't have a pump peg.
- The serial number is closer to the '85 format than the '87 format.

i also found that....https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...fy-thanks.html . It has shimano 105, same decals, serial number with two letters and two numbers, same color, ... Maybe it is realy Dolomite? What is the price of that mid-range pinarellos?

Well you could check the seat tube internal diameter:

Catena Lusso - Columbus Aelle - 26.8
Dolomite - Columbus Matrix - 27.2

I'm sticking with Catena Lusso, but I see why you think it may be a Dolomite.

My '87 Montello (estimated from the 1st gen Chorus parts, and the word of the shop where I bought it - they were reselling it for the original owner) has an SSxxx serial number. My early 80s Record has a single letter and 3 digits.
The Pinarello name on the bottom bracket is in a font that doesnt match either of mine. For that matter, both of mine have raised lettering for Treviso-Italy.
I'm curious about the paint as well - 6th photo its clearly blue but 3 or 4 photos down its clearly not - looks fairly rusty but also with no hint of shine to the chrome, if its chrome.

As was mentioned above, the seat post diameter should give you the answer.

I got a Dolomite last Fall and it was fitted with full Shimano 105 (except for changed out brake levers and the front wheel. A nice enough bike and I really should take it out for a spin but other projects and riders seem to be getting in the way. My guess is that my Dolomite is a bit older than the OP's...

Note the lack of panto on the seat stay caps. Indicator of a lower level Pin. Haven't seen decals on the TT like that before either. BB gives it the Pin ID. What is the name on the drop outs?

Under 27, so you’d have to say Columbus Aelle as seen on the Catena Lusso.

Pinarello Help

I’m sorry if I’m hijacking the thread, but I’ve got a similar issue with finding out what bike I have based on the serial number. The number says maybe D followed by a 34. The rims, saddle, and seat post aren’t original. The decals are reproduction and bad ones. It has one bottle holder but is drilled for two. It’s a turquoise color.

Unfortunately Pinarello serial numbers don't tell you much - more on that later.

The fork crown is the older style indicating around 1985 or earlier. Seat tube bottle mounts started appearing around 1985, so I think mid 80's is a fair guess at the production date. There are no GPT logos on the seat stay caps, so looking at the 1985 catalog the Catena Lusso and Triathlon Victory fit the description. If we think the cranks are original being Campy Victory, then Triathlon Victory it is. Of course, we don't know if the cranks are original or not.

What's odd is frame pump mounts didn't really start appearing on Pinarellos until 1997 1987, but maybe they could be ordered with them. For a mid 80's Pinarello I'd expect to see a serial number XX### (X=letters, #=numbers) but yours is X##. It's closer to the early 80's serial number format X### - so it might be earlier than I'm guessing. But looking at the 1981 catalog the models with blank seat stay caps don't have front derailleur tabs, sooooo...I don't know, but I'm sticking with mid 80's Triathlon Victory.

Did you mean '87?

Here's an 87 Montello with pump peg (XX### serial)

and an earlier Record also with peg (X### serial):

Oops! Yes, '87.

That's interesting your Record has a pump peg, perhaps they were more common than I thought.

I was looking at the 1985 catalog and it has everything (that is original) that the Treviso N.R. has. Thoughts? It came in turquoise.

The Treviso has GPT on the seat stay caps, but yours doesn't. Trevisos of that era had clamp on front derailleurs, but yours has an FD tab. Most of the colours were available across models.

Looking at the catalog, your responses, and my bike again... I would have to concur that it’s a Victory. Pretty cool that it’s a tri-bike, because I collect Centurion Ironman bikes.

Update

Here is an update to the work I’ve done on the bike. I’ve got new decals in order from Velocal. Unfortunately they don’t have the “Triathlon Mod” decal. Most people either laugh at me or don’t believe that I have a Triathlon Victory. Not sure why? I wish there were more pictures on the internet to compare it.

IMHO Montellos don't really fit into this discussion as they are so different than the middle to "lower" end, with SLX, and unique BB shell.
The mystery Pinarello in my possession has the flush bottle mounts on the seat tube and standard braze on bottle mounts on the down tube.
P1030827 on Flickr
The post diameter is 27.2. Plain seat stay caps but GPT on the brazed on FD mount. Clearly Pinarello BB shell and no chrome anywhere. The fork is sloping with no markings. I know it is original because the original paint was on the bike when purchased and the steerer was marked with a dove and overspray. DO are Pinarello. Stripped Painted frame was 4lb 10 oz with the fork coming in at 1lb 12oz. Bike as purchased was 22lbs. SN 178 C.

Pinarello Vento- as purchased on Flickr

At first I thought it was a Tre Crimi but it doesn't have the chrome chain stay. I ended up believing it is a Veneto. Paint was so bad, I stripped it. Built it up with Suntour Superbe for my daughter (too small for me) and she loved it. Need to finish it. I think it will get 105 group set.
