First Crash... 8 Days before Tri
How frustrating... I crashed on Saturday for the first time on my bike and my triathlon is only 8 days away. I was very lucky that my bike only needs a new tire and tubes and I didn't seriously hurt anything just scraped up pretty good. I was descending too fast (about 40mph) on a windy road and took a corner too fast. I don't know how the guys in the tour get back out there with their injuries, but I was in bed for a day and a half!
Anyways, I guess I'm lucky this happened on my taper week, plus it's only a Sprint tri so I should be able to get through it on adrenaline.
Lesson Learned: Even when you tell yourself to be careful, BE CAREFUL! I was tired from climbing for two hours and dehydrated. I knew it too and was just looking to get home and 5 seconds of a lapse in concentration and I was going too fast and was sliding across the road before I knew what hit me.

Glad you only lost a bit of bark and didn't break anything. It only take a split second lapse in concentration for things to go belly up!

I crashed 2 weeks ago tomorrow doing a measly 10-12 mph...hit a patch of sand, went down, snapped an aerobar armrest, ripped up my bar tape, tweaked my saddle, unadjusted my FD, and gave me much more road rash than I would have anticipated. Can't imagine crashing doing 40...heal quickly

Thanks for all the kind words everyone. The more I've thought about it the more I'm realizing I couldn't have come out of this much better and I'm SO LUCKY it wasn't worse. Last night (Tuesday) was my first night back on my feet and I did a few miles of running with just a little discomfort. That made me feel good. Tonight I'll put the bike back together and make sure there isnt' anything really out of whack.
4 days until the Oxnard, CA Strawberry Fields Triathlon. I'll let you know how it goes!

Well it's Monday am and I completed my triathlon. And thanks to the many tips I got from this board, I did MUCH better than I thought I would do! Yes, adrenaline is a great thing indeed. hahaha. I beat my target time by more than 10 minutes. My road-rash didn't bother me too much either, just the huge one on my thigh, which I lubed up pretty good to keep it moist.
Below are my times. I figured if I transitioned really fast, it would make up for my slow running. I do have to say that if I would have been in the Clydesdale division (I weigh 213) I would've placed 2nd. But for some reason I just hate labeling myself that. What I just need to do is get down another 15 lbs! Anyways here's my times:
Place Overall: 147
Place Division (35-39): 19
Total: 1:14:51
Swim (450m) 9:28
Transition 1: 1:52
Bike (11 miles): 33:24
Transition 2: 1:01
Run (3 Miles): 29:06

Way to go! Broke my right pinkie joint a week before my first tri this year. Taped that joker and did the tri anyway. Not like this is supposed to be an easy sport anyway right?

Glad you're okay. I had a similar wipeout about 4 years ago. Lost skin, bent handlebars, and toasted my shorts and jersey but all else was fine. Fraction of a second miscalculation and off we go...
It's a good reminder that even the most experienced riders go down.
Days 2 and 3 of recovery were the worst for the road rash and soreness. After that I felt mostly normal. My guess is that you'll be a bit less comfortable for your Tri but should be good to go. Good luck!

Sorry but closing thread. The thread is nine years old. But the lesson rumrunn6 expressed is very valid - don’t get complacent.
