Questions about a LeMond, a Trek, and a Klein
Hi all,
I am in the market for a new road bike in the SoCal region, and I have been browsing Craigslist for the last few days. I found three that I am interested in, a Trek 5000 OCLV that I think is from 1998 for 490$, a Klein Quantum that I think it from 1990 for 380$, and a Lemond Tourmalet that I think is from 2001 for 425$.

From what I've read on this forum, the prices are all a little high. I have the cash and I would really like to start biking again (Found a bad crack in my 1992 Cannondale R600 a few months ago), but I am also willing to try to negotiate prices down if the consensus is that they are a little pricey. I am not the most experienced or serious bicyclist, but I would like to get a decent bike that I can enjoy and use to commute to school everyday. I know these bikes are all different materials, different sizes, and from differing eras, but nonetheless I am having a hard time deciding which one to get. I am 6'0", so would 56cm be definitely too small?
I think the most important thing to me is getting the best bang for my buck. Which bike is the most worth it for the price? I am visiting the Trek tonight. What would be a good price to aim for in negotiating? 400? If I can get it there, should I buy it on the spot if there are no cracks? Or should I wait to try to get a better deal on the other two? Any general advice?
Sorry, I know there are a lot of noob questions, but I really appreciate your time.
P.S. I have the time and a friend with tools to deal with any minor issues that the bikes may have.

Bang for the buck, I like the LeMond. Keep in mind that LeMond frames have longish top tubes, so if you're got a long torso and/or feel like stretching out, great. If short torso and you don't like feeling stretched out, not so great.
The prices don't seem high to me. In my area, the Trek 5000 could easily go for $600+. We don't see as many Kleins around here, so no input on that. $425 seems reasonable for the LeMond if it's Reynolds 853, maybe a little less for TrueTemper or Reynolds 525.

Ok, thanks. That makes me feel a lot better about not being ripped off. I'll see if the 58cm Trek fits well, and if it feels uncomfortable I'll try to take a look at the LeMond.

In that bunch..gotta go for the Lemond, hands down. Price doesn't seem too far out..there's always some flexibility in a sale. 853 "designer select" frame and 525 "designer select" stays..sweet ride. A 56 (Lemonds came in 55cm and 57cm) may be smallish if you're 6 foot, but Lemonds fit folks a little differently than many bikes. A 55 may fit you, a 57 should be fine I'd think. Riding it is the only way to tell.
The Lemond ad you've shown says it's a 56..this is an error and it could be a 55 or 57 frame. Looks like a 55 to me.
The Trek 5000 you've pictured looks an awful lot like a '96 Lemond MJ.
SoCal always has so many Lemonds available..must be nice. There looks to be a titanium one available in a 59 for $995..may be too large, but the price isn't bad at all..at least for my area.

Comparing against this side shot of my 55cm Zurich I'd say the one in the ad is bigger so must be a 57cm.

Thanks for all the replies. The Trek had a lot of issues, so now I have the opportunity to go look at Lemond this afternoon. Hopefully its 57. I'll keep everyone updated.

Yeah..just looked at mine(55)..I believe you're right. For a 6 footer the 55 is a maybe and the 57 should be a pretty reasonable fit.
