First thousand mile year in 22 years
My first year back into bicycling and I was able to ride 1,000 miles so far, starting on July 10th! Next year; 2,000 miles and the Ironman. I started with a REI bike. 424.5 on the REI bike, 506.8 on the Cannondale and 74.8 on the Bianchi. The REI was returned to the store. I am about 6' tall and the salesman sized me in a bike designed for someone 5'6" to 5'9" tall. Try as I might, it never felt right. REI did the right thing and fully refunded my money. A stand-up company. If I had bought the Bianchi first, that would be my only bike, it is incredible.

Ha, update this thread next year. I bet you'll do more than 2000 miles! (Although Minnesota must have a fairly short riding season.)
I think that riders doing more than 50 miles a week, 2 or more rides a week, get good riding fitness, and then start doing longer or more rides.
Doing group rides with a compatible paced group can help. It's motivation for me to make sure I'm riding regularly, so I can keep up. And having a set schedule is good, it gets me out the door. On top of that, the rides are more fun with others, and they know a lot of good routes that aren't obvious to a solo rider.

Congratulations. I am just below 900 and hope to have a 1000 mile year also by Dec.31. You have given me a kick in the butt to make sure to get the final miles done. Thankfully, as far as riding a bike goes, I live in a place where I can ride almost all year so I have no excuses. Will the Cateye sync with Strava?

Honestly I don't know. I just use it to record my mileage, which I take a snapshot of at the end of most rides to document my riding. I just bought a Karoo which next season I will link with Strava, but I will continue to use the Cateye on both bikes. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Yeeha! How exciting. My first year (2009), I was super-proud to complete 1500 miles. At the end of the summer I was proud of myself to complete the (38 mile) Minneapolis Bike Tour. The next year it was 4500 and my first century and the year after it was 7000. Each step up was so exhilarating.
the only warnings are that you are going to be spending a lot of money on bike paraphenalia and that you need to be careful about injuries (e.g., do things in advance to minimize them and be philosophical about them when they happen)

Great job! I had my first 1000 mile year in, well, ever. I'm going to go for 2020 miles next year.

Ok, congrats, but now you're unwittingly shaming me, especially when I think the following:
In Arizona weather, that's about 3 miles a day!
In Michigan temperatures that's about 6 miles a day (6 months of non-frigid temperatures).
In Michigan with precip cut that in half again, to get about 12 miles every day with decent weather.
Taking into account a day by day cycle of ride - recover - ride - recover, it's a 25 mile (2 hour) ride every other day in decent weather, average speed 12.5 mph.
This is workable for me!

If you track mileage with a phone app (Strava, RideWithGPS, etc), then you don't have to split it across multiple devices. And, it can keep track of annual mileage for years. Plus elevation, cumulative "lifetime" mileage, time, speed, etc.
You can even background the app if you wish.
