Advice for tall 3yo already outgrowing strider

So our 3.3ish year old has started to get a little tall for his strider bike, just as he's getting the knack for balancing/coasting. He's very tall/long-legged for his age We're looking at larger balance bikes. I'm also considering buying a kids pedal bike and removing the crank/chain to add back on once he's ready. Thoughts? Do you you think the pedal bike will make a less-good balance bike? Is there anything i'm missing in the geometry that would make that difficult for him?

Two suggestions:

1. A Kid's bike that fits. Take the pedals off until he learns to balance and coast.

2. A tandem (new or used, depending on your budget).

my kids never used "strider" bikes. you might just get a small bike w pedals & let him try that. he might be a natural!

I didn't do the strider deal. I got him a nicer pedal bike and removed the pedals. At first I had to wrap the crank arm in bubble wrap and tape it on because he kept hitting his legs but once he got it down it was easy going. He did the push thing on the regular bike for not very long at all and then there was no looking back. he was gone!

Glad I didn't waste money on a strider bike.

My 3 year old grandson still barely fits on the smallest strider I could find. Poor little guy may never even make it to 5'5". But getting on that strider and he is happy. Now I need to find a pedal bike for him. I think he can do it. Can barely wait for the 1 year old...

Previous replies got the culdesac stuff covered.. But for going places a tandem can be the solution. An older american tandem can be had cheap. Either with a kid back crank set for small kids, or back chopped for taller kids. Or even with no rear cranks at all they can still be fun for kids to cruise with you.

The add-a-bike stuff works too I guess, but to me an old 70's tandem is better.

So true. I've seen tiny kids, maybe 3-4, on tiny bikes riding along in total control with their parents.

Prior post was from before Christmas, so the problem was likely resolved.
