Couldn't they have just given her the 500K and sent her to a legit state college? I mean is her earning potential that high from an "elite" university? I would think once out into the job market, the reality of her skills might "peter principle" her quickly, in spite of the "prestigious degree."

Personally, I think she should have been fined and then use that money to issue several aspiring and deserving students a scholarship.

And so what happened to the people accepting the bribe. Accepting bribes is not a crime.

All these parents involved are sooooo stupid and desperate. Pretty sad to see these high profile people doing crap like this. Never in my right mind would I think of cheating for my daughter.
I feel sorry for the kids.

She's going from a "full House" to the "Big House".

People do want their offspring to go to 'brand-name' schools for the bragging rights, and there are some industries that preferentially hire grads from 'brand-name' schools. Think law schools, MBA programs, medical schools, some engineering schools, to name a few.

this whole series of "admission crimes" is ludicrous ... if the schools got the $$$ no harm no crime >>> if a coach or institution employee pocketed the $$$ that person is the criminal ... any half wit can make the case that college admission "standards" are situational at best ... never mind the scholar athlete hypocrisy and coaches side earnings and booster world and alum donor networks and legacy kids and diversity quota manipulation > these "cases present nothing that begs for criminal justice intervention ... any student deemed "unworthy" could have been unadmitted & the $$$ kept by the school ... these are FEDERAL cases administered by the BARR run DOJ and initiated by the HOLDER run DOJ and authored by over zealous judicial bureaucrats masquerading as prosecutors ...ameriKa can sleep well tonite lori is off the streets

She committed the unpardonable sin of being a social climber without the requisite pedigree and sponsor to admit her into the illuminati. For $500,000, she could have bought her daughters PhDs from Trump University and become deputy assistant secretary of education.

The problem wasn't bribery or even being caught. The problem was being a fish in a swamp filled with alligators and crocodiles.

I'm wondering ... If it's a private institution, private staffers (not "officials"), and a private transaction (despite its seedy nature of undermining legitimacy), what's the statutory infraction? How would it differ from, say, "bribing" the nearby high school kid to mow our lawn this weekend instead of the lawn over at the Johnsons'? Hm. Fraud, I'm assuming, and damaging the prospects of others because of corrupting the process.

That said, I can't abide undermining the legitimacy of a school, the so-called "standards" the school operates under, and all of that. Others have been injured by failure to get considered, because "fluffs" like this twit's daughter got in instead. But then, if they were the injured parties, then they'll be the recipients of any cash obtained from the case ... right?

Yeah.

Good day to ride, today. A bit warmer, breezier, no rain. All the better to take one's mind off the mindless "news" out there.

A lot of those so-called 'private' schools like USC, Stanford, Harvard, Yale, etc, get grants from the Federal government for all types of things -research, construction, and scholarships for qualifying students. Lots of those grants come with conditions, and I'll bet some involve bribery and conspiracy and other white-collar crimes. Heck, if it was me, I wouldn't let anyone in on a sports based scholarship - the student would have to qualify for admission among the regular pool of applicants based largely on academics, only then could they be granted a sports scholarship.

Just from an academic standpoint, I agree with you. Folks would be better off, all the way around. At every level. Imagine, at least here in the U.S., so many additional people graduating actually knowing how to read and comprehend anything other than a sports contract and depositing a signing check. That'd be something.

In this particular case, if the "rowing" angle made a difference in the admission, it's hard to imagine an admissions staffer believing someone's got rowing "experience" merely from seeing a photo of the applicant sitting on a rowing machine.
