Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'd like to change my vote. I have now ridden many miles on the Arione, Aliante, and the SLR and the Aliante fits me absolutely perfectly.

I am constantly trying to get more comfortable on the bike, but since I bought the Swift, the saddle is the furthest thing from my mind when it comes to comfort upgrades. I know a lot of people bad mouth Brooks, and I woould venture a guess they have not tried one or have given one the proper opportunity to break in.
I will say that the Fi'Zik Aliante was a close second.
+1 for the Swift. Mine is the Ti rail version and is the most comfortable saddle I've ridden.

Hello new guy here,

Came across this forum and thread because i'm looking for a new saddle. Am i right to assume that all the comments about all the saddles in this thread was made with the assumption that one would be riding with tights on? and padding? I will be commuting a lot so sometimes proper bike shorts and padding will not be possible, as it is I am using the stock saddle that came with my old Cannondale, it is a selle san marco ponza and it is like a dagger, are any of the popular saddles here good to ride for about 20 miles without padding on?

thanks and sorry if it's a dumb question

I'm liking my Brooks for no-padding riding.

The way I see it, there are two key saddle characteristics that make riding without biking shorts nicer -- good compliance and low friction. Most thickly-padded saddles also tend to grip your clothing more, and the skin-on-fabric rubbing motion will cause chafing. Brooks's smooth leather doesn't grip clothing at all, it seems.

For compliance... well, it's hard to find a saddle that's truly hard, though -- even the thin Specialized Toupe and all-carbon Fizik Arione K:1 have some give to them and provide their own suspension.

I'd say to try a Brooks, if for no other reason than their insanely low depreciation. If you buy from Wallingford, they've got a great return policy if you don't like it (no doubt also helped by the saddles' low depreciation, since they sell the returned saddles on eBay).

thank you that was very helpful, after doing some research on the forums I have narrowed my choice down to a Brooks Swift and a San Marco regal, regal looks simiiar to the brooks and is quite abit cheaper so i guess i will try that first. Will update with findings if anyone is interested

I think any saddle can feel at bit better with padding. But a bad saddle is still bad even with padding. That having been said, I have found that the Fizik Aliante gamma works well for me with or without.
