i have a friend interested in getting a new S3, on the site it shows it with ZIPP 404 wheels but in the specs it says fulcrum racing 7 wheels. in confused, it doesnt show anywhere you can upgrade to the ZIPPs as pictured.

haha true, can you buy one with them already on there? he is wanting some kickass wheels on it from the start so he dont have to upgrade later.

My LBS had said they would swap them out for some extra money, so I guess it depends on where he buys it from. The Fulcrum wheels have terrible resale value, they're worth more to just keep as extras than to sell.

My Cervelo dealer will change or upgrade any stock part for a pretty competitive price. I changed the stock wheels to a Powertap wheel and got a decent credit for the stock wheels.

All Cervelos come with 200 dollar Fulcum 7's. Based on the premise that your going to swap out wheels anyways. Take a 6600 dollar R5. The bike is already 6600, add another 2300 for some Zipp tubulars...your at almost 10k by the time you walk out the door.

The S5's seemed to be available to the dealers that went to the Cervelo conference in Colorado a couple months back. There is a 54cm sitting at my LBS now.

I guess it kinda depends on the shop as well. When I got my 58 cm S1, it had Fulcrum 5 wheels and Ultegra 6700, while the 56 cm (at the exact same price) had Shimano R500 wheels and a 6600 group. In addition, the 56 had Cervelo brand brakes, while the 58 has FSA brakes. (I've no idea which brakes are better, though. I'm just happy to ride on nicer wheels and a newer groupset.

Actually, I'm a bit curious. Is it standard practice for the shops to set up bikes as they wish, or is it usually decided and specified by (in this case) Cervelo?

I would get a S5 instead. Yes all Cervelos come with cheap wheels, you might be better off getting the wheels at another place for example I got Mavic's on line at Bonktown for $1,000.

Depends on the shop. Dealers can buy complete bikes (at Cervelo specs) or framesets only and build it to the shop or customer's specs.

S3 with Zipps is quite a set up. Is your friend an experienced rider? Or a dentist?

I agree that Fulcrum 7's will serve as good back up wheels or something to go on a different bike. I've seen them on Bonktown for $139 recently. Heavy but solid wheels, would be good for commuting or training. Also, they sound nice if you like a loud hub.

The shop I go to mostly buys the bikes as Cervelo specs them, but then fits the bikes for test rides. They'll usually trade one stem for another, swap out the seat post for a setback one, and do other small modifications. Most of this stuff is just a trade basis.

we just like to get out and ride for fun and fitness. he has a specialized roubiax now and wants to upgrade to something lighter and racier instead of upgrading his current bike with new wheels. im trying to talk him into getting the S5 with rival, their site has it listed at $3800, thats not bad but he'll want to swap the wheels out for something when he gets it.

Unless he is a racer or a really aggressive rider doing hard group rides, some might look at him like a poseur. You don't want to be THAT guy with the uber expensive bike getting owned by riders on entry level bikes. You probably wont be able to tell the difference. It is pretty much a show off factor. No offense, and your friend will do what he wants, but this is what a friend told me when I was inquiring about carbon wheels back then.

Yeah, many of the Cervelo bikes come with Fulcrum Racing 7s, which is the bottom of the Fulcrum line and a pretty heavy set of wheels. My Felt Z4 came with the same wheels. I switched them out for another set of inexpensive wheels (Neuvation M28 Aeros for right around $200) and the Neuvations were nearly a pound lighter (approx 380 gms lighter). I'm a lard ass on my bike, but I could feel the difference with lighter wheels.

no doubt. he will probably enjoy it more than his current bike. we live in a small town anyways, not a big cycling community and we only have one LBS and they sell trek so if anyone is on something other than that they probably assume its a crap bike from walmart. most people around here have probably never heard of cervelo. oh well.

are zipp's a good wheel to just ride for fitness on? i was under the impression that they are a racing wheel and are no good for training. If he wants a good wheelset, why not just get some Fulcrum Racing 3's or 1's? just a thought. Of course, i could be way off base here.
