Smoothing braking surface on rim?
I have a wheel that seems to leave shards of aluminum in my brake pads way too often. I would say that about after every 5 rides I'm removing the pads and picking out shards/specs on a regular basis. They are quite small and I can remove them with a sewing needle. But they soon return. I can always tell when they return because you get that metal on metal sound when you brake.
I have tried using a fine flexible/sponge sanding pad (lightly) but I'm looking for other ideas as to how to finish them off. For the record these are the stock Bontrager rims that came on my Trek 7.4 FX and I'm currently using Shimano pads.
I clean the rims with OMS and lightly sand the pads after each cleaning. But the problem persists.

The problem is not your rims. It’s your brake pads.
Replace your brake pads with Koolstop salmon pads.
Replace your brake pads with Koolstop salmon pads.

I have gone through...
1. Stock pads
2. Upgrade to KoolStop Black Mountain pads.
3. Shimano
4. I have a new set of KoolStop Black/Salmon I will give a try.
1-3 all had the same results... shards.

In my experience, when a rim starts shedding aluminum into the brake pads, it never stops. I replace the rim and the pads.

I'm going to try and take some superfine (1200 grit) to the rim before putting on the new pads. We'll see what happens.
