What size tire can I apply to this oddly-sized rim?
Hi. I have a rim that I purchased at the LBS a year or so ago, and they sold it to me as a 26-inch rim (it has a coaster brake, which I love, and I use it on my mountain bike along with hand brakes. I use the coaster brake a lot as it keeps my hands free to grip the bars most of the time. I only need the hand brakes for steep descents and sudden stops).
Anyway, The rim is a strange size. It's not a regular 26-inch wheel. The size is listed as 26 x 1 3/8--37mm/590 mm.
It won't take the run-of-the-mill 26-inch tires that you'd find at walmart. I currently have a hybrid tire on it that's closer to road bike tires than anything else.
My question is this: What kind of standard-size mountain bike tire would fit this odd rim? Should I go for 27 inch or 28 inch? I want a knobby on it so I can go off road a bit.
Thanks for any suggestions.

590mm ERD rims and tires/tubes to fit are not rare or expensive; any decent bike shop should be able to get some for you. But you're right, 590mm is not the mountain bike standard. Alas, there are five different, incompatible 26" rim standards out there:

the 590mm rim is the very common 26 x 1-3/8" size used on British (aka Raleigh) "3-speed" bikes for half a century (or more). When shopping on line search 37-590 tire, or if you go to a bike shop say you need a tire for a 26x1-3/8 3-speed.--- not a mtn bike.
Unfortunately, this is becomming a less popular tire so the selection at bike shops will be limited.

https://www.niagaracycle.com/categori...-wire-gum-wall looks pretty good and is cheap as all getout. Googling led me to this page: https://emptybits.com/650a
If you want genuinely high performance MTB tires you really just need to get a 29" (622), 26" (559) or, now, 650B/27.5" (584) tire. I'm surprised a shop would sell you an uncommon rim type. Sounds less than totally competent.

It sounds like a whole wheel was purchased, perhaps with the (mis)understanding that the OP wouldn't be using handbrakes with it. (I like the Panaracer Col de Vie tires for this rim size.)

+1. Expect the OP is referring to what is common on English 3 speeds, back in the day..

If you got this thinking it was for an MTB, you got the wrong wheel
26" MTB wheels are 559, rim smaller , tire fatter.
