Rivendell vs. BikesDirect vs Wal*Mart Death Match

Who is more evil? The little company that picks on roadies, the dude that pretends to be defunct bike companies or the corporate behemoth? Discuss 'till you puke. It's the Ultimate Troll Fest! Enjoy or ignore.

Bikes Direct: o.k., so they claim to be companies that no longer exist. there's a lot of that going around.
Rivendell: heck, i make fun of my lycra.
WalMart: pure, undiluted evil. duh. haven't you seen the South Park episode?

I kinda like the Rivendell bikes. Petersen's close-minded attitude, not so much.

Doesn't bikesdirect have to purchase the rights to the brands he uses? brands get sold all the time. There is no pretense at walmart. it is what it is. but rivendell, well, bikes built by elves...? that just ain't 'merican, s'all i have to say.

I don't think Whale-Mart is evil, per se, but given the average girth of their clientele, I find it distasteful from an aesthetic and health perspective. Their stores also tend to be overly crowded.

I rarely shop there, but I might ride my bike there this evening to buy the new Eagles CD.

FWIW, I remember when Whale-Mart first expanded to the small towns in the South. They prominently featured "Made in USA" on most of their products, and appealed to Cold War era patriotism...now, try and find anything in their stores that wasn't made in China.

I'm sorry, I missed the part where one of us was disagreeing with the other. Care to point it out?

My position, and i am sticking by it! :

Love Rivendell! Go Elves! Go Unamericanism!!

BikesDirect, dunno much about them but sounds fishy, doubt i'll ever deal with them.

Walmart, Scum, Satanspawn and Truly Unamerican, unless you consider China a far Flung US province of your idea of Freedom and justice for all involves destroying small business and utterly exploiting employees.

Whats the big deal about Rivendell? they charge an arm and a leg for obsolete steel frames just like the ones that I pull out of dumpsters all the time. And if the guy that makes them wants your opinion he'll give it to you.... like the one about clipless pedal systems having no advantage whatsoever over platforms. gimmie a break!

They all make and shell *****, at least wal-mart price their abominations accordingly.

And Jilad. At Tanagra. Darmok, and Jilad--on the ocean.

The beast of Tanagra. Uzani, his army. Chaka, when the walls fell.

Bikes Direct gets my vote (even though I think it is a pretty decent company if you don't buy into the website hype: The only entity that is not completely forthcoming with it's customers. An unknowing buyer might be fooled into believing that he is actually buying the same bike on which the hour record was achieved. Moreover, representing a no--name frame as having the retail value of a name brand is dishonest. The generic market gets lower prices because the market value of an unknown brand is less. Simple.

WallMart: Super big, super aggressive business plan (but we all know what we are getting)

Rivendell: They don't even begin to pretend to appeal to everyone; and they are up front about what they are doing and believe in.

Rivendell might make fun of lycra but they sell some equally-silly clothes of a different sort.

I'm going to make this the perfect storm, and ask if it is ok to carry firearms while vehicular cycling in a Critical Mass ride on a WalMart Bike purchased from BikesDirect?

Yes...but, only if your bike is equipped with a Brooks saddle, and a leather Rivendell holster.

BikesDirect is buying the rights to sell Huffy-branded bikes. It's unclear whether they will sell them for $10 or $1000.
