Thanks for the props!! I'm running Hunt 650b with 48mm Gravelking TLC"s. Great tire for the GAP. They roll nice on anything and got some great grip in everything except deep mud. Always wanted to do the GAP and I like to push myself, especially alone and self supported. If we don't push ourselves we don't know our limits and won't know how to deal with adversity, which doesn't make us grow and experience the best we can be.

Exploring some roads north of Calgary, we call these small valleys with streams "coulees"

Epic ride Saturday NEW RIVER TRAIL STATE PARK
Rode 34.9 miles with my 9 year old son for Ice cream. I miscalculated how far it was but he made it the whole way. New River Trail state park in VA.
chilly at a waterfall. He was spent by the time we got here.
near the beginning beautiful day
bridge over the New River
My Salsa doing what it was created to do. Roll Gravel!

Tell your son that your invisible friends are VERY impressed. He did an outstanding job.

I tried some single track on my commute home this afternoon.
Hadn't ridden this area in a couple years as one our our rivers has been flooded for about that long thanks to the insane policy/decisions of the Army Corp of Engineers. They changed their approach to flood management a couple months ago and the mtb area is slowly drying out.
It was fun, but short lived as I had to turn around. Due to erosion from the continued flooding, there is a permanent creek where once there was single track.
Sucks- it was once a fun fast river bottom track.
Dirt is close enough to gravel for today.

This is next to the Des Moines river just south of saylorville dam. The output level over the last 20 months caused sustained flooding in what used to be areas that were usable for 45 of the 52 weeks. A major paved trail in the heart of the city has been under water for a year and a half- its crushing to car alternative infrastructure and recreational activities(walking, running, cycling, dog walks, etc).
The single track used to split off and run along the river- that entire track washed away and the inner forest track is what I used...and that isn't much better.
Hopey with the new river output approach, this will revert back to how it was in prior years.
I would guess that based on location, you are even more affected by river flooding.

Hardly any one out this morning, so nice
Our local haunted ruins
Very sketchy surface for my stock tires, no grip uphill and front wheel brake management required.
Quiet in the woods

Last week I took my new Checkpoint ALR5 out to ride the Deschutes River Trail, which is about a 1.5hr drive East of Portland, OR:
The trail itself is around 19 miles, so I did an out and back to the end of the trail. I read reports of rattlesnakes and goathead thorns on the trail, but only encountered one rattlesnake and thankfully no goatheads - it must not be their season yet. Starting this ride early is a must, as it gets really hot during the summer and shade is hard to find on the trail. I brought 4 liters of water, and that was barely enough. Other than seeing a couple of fly fishing folks on bikes in the morning, I was alone the whole time, so it's important to be self-sufficient. I had brought 4 tubes and a patch kit just in case. It was a great adventure and start of my new gravel riding obsession!

Central Iowa doesnt have any inspiring views, epic climbs, or heart pounding descents. 50'/mile of climb is pretty much what most every gravel ride ends up being.
What it does have are in these pics-
Thousands of miles of gravel passing by beans, corn, ditch flowers...and apparently goats that chase you along the fenceline(it was hilarious to see)

I had an amazing weekend at the Rooted Vermont event put on by Ted and Laura King in Richmond, VT. Having only recently gotten into cycling this past May, this was a great introduction into the world.
I did the short ride which was around 47 miles with about 4,400 feet of climbing.
I also had time to do some solo exploring and visit a couple of breweries.
