1983 Trek 970

The bike is marked 970 and looks to be 1983 made, but the s.n. 008837 gives the frame made 1981 and a 950.
Is it possible it was made in '81 and put it together in '83, as a 970?
Also, it is a mix of components, Campagnolo, Dura-Ace, Stronglight, Dia-Compe.
What is the value of the bike, in your opinion, or the value of only frame/frame?
Some pictures:

Not sure about a replacement of rear drop out.

Sounds right on being a frame born in '81 and bike built up for '83. I had a sold-as-frame-only '82 950 and built it up with tri-color Shimano 600. It's one of the best riding bikes I've had. A friend who bought it from me is probably grinning while riding it today. Trek got this one right.

With the mixture of parts on this 970, I'd probably sell it as a frame and ask in the $250 range. Although, I've never seen one with the dropouts painted black. from the scratch on the dropout, looks like there is red paint underneath. Don't know if that affects the selling price. There's significant value in the parts separately too, of course.

I am curious about the serial number discrepancy?
looking up SN 008837 I also came up with '81- 950, when I looked at Vintage Trek?

I know frames are often made one year and released the next, but 2 years later? The other strange part is under Serial numbers for 1983 ( the year the 970 is in the catalog), there are clear listings for range of serial numbers for 970's in the various sizes - Vintage Trek Serial Numbers 1983. There are no 970's listed under the '81 or '82 serial #'s

Was the 950 frame the same as the 970?
Would Trek have repurposed/repainted a 81' 950 as a 970?
Or is it more likely that someone bought an 81' 950 and repainted/decaled as a '83 970?
Or is it more likely the Vintage Trek database is wrong?

They're Shimano UF. They have a reputation for cracking through the adjuster screw bore. If they've made it this long, they're likely never going to Crack. It would not surprise me if they've been replaced. My '81 95X frameset had them replaced early in its life.

Check the '82 and '83 catalogs. In '82, the Columbus tubed racer started as a 950 frame and was either a 957 or 959 model according to how it was built up. Trek offered the 950 as a frame only in '82 also. In '83, they built the same frame and called it the 970. 1983 was the end of the Columbus tubed racers, unfortunately. Fledgling Trek probably was still thought of as more of a touring bike company if I had to guess.

Shimano UF:

They were used on early production 970s, but there was a low but unacceptable failure rate on the drive side rear dropout, and they were replaced with Campagnolo 1010Bs in later production.

The failures we saw at Trek were at the chainstay tab, not the adjuster bolt.
