I use a ruler to measure the chain. Usually the chain needs replacement every 3k miles. YMMV

Ok, what about performance? If lets say you have 5k miles on chain. Will it skip, have difficulty changing gears? etc.

When my park chain tool tells me to, once the .75 end fits in between the chain links, I switch it asap, till then it’s good. (Im on 10 speed though, 11speed you change at .50 wear)
Hassle and worry free way of checking, tool is like 10bux

You get skipping when you put a new chain on a worn-out cassette.

Every couple thousand miles or so, whenever shifting gets compromised.

Don't be like me.
I waited too long and it kept working fine.
Then, when I checked it was 1/8 inch over 12 inches.
Put a new chain on and it skipped.
Put a new cassette on and it shifted like new, but it still skipped.
Put new chainrings on tonight, so we'll see what happens tomorrow...
