Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Thoughts on this "new" 2004 Allez on Craigslist?

I used to own a 2008 Specialized Allez which I loved, but it was a 58 and a size too big for me. I ended up selling it and getting a dedicated triathlon bike, but I miss the versatility of a true road bike for riding around town, group rides, etc.

So I find this 2004 Allez Elite Double on craiglist, 105 all around, 56cm and the guy says he bought it new a few years ago. I asked him what he meant and he says he has a receipt to show he bought it in 2009 new and that it only has 338 miles on it. I have no idea how that's possible, but the thing does look clean in pics.

He's asking $800. It's obviously not worth that considering it was $1050 8 years ago. What is the build quality from then compared to now? Thoughts on an offer amount?

he's going to be offended by just about any realistic offer. I wouldn't give him over 400-450 for it cuz you can get a new '12 9spd Allez for about the same money he's asking. however, it doesn't hurt to ask but he's gonna be righteously upset with a offer that low, but you never know until you ask. just my .02

Depends on your local market. I could see that selling for $600-650 in Portland with a listing around $700. I wouldn't pay that much, but that's my guess from buying, selling, and watching a number of used bikes over the past few years. In fact, I have a similar aged, 105-level bike listed right now for more and I'm getting e-mails. If it were at $500 - it would be gone fast.

an '04 allez 105 for $700? that's crazy. As others have said, $500 would be the max I would pay for that bike. I picked up my '09 allez 105 with <500miles for $700 last year.

No, I'm serious. Again I didn't say I'd pay that much, but these three Allez's are all listed at $600 in Portland and are a notch down from the OP's find:

I can never understand why CL bike sellers always ask 30% MORE for their dated, hyped-up rides....

Send him a link to this thread and ask him to give you a call if he has any interest in discussing price.

If it's a 2004, why/how did he buy it new in 2009? That's not impossible, but it's unusual enough that I'd ask questions.

People want to get their money back, and they want to keep up with inflation while doing it. If the guy the OP is considering buying a bike from paid $1,050 in 2004, that'd be about $1,275 in today's dollars.

Said he'd do $550. It's at least worth looking at now. How different should I expect it to be from the 2008 I had? I believe they used the same A1 frame and carbon fork/seatpost.

Yea sorry, my sentiment was toward the fact that people are still asking these prices, not so much your personal feedback.

OP, $550 is reasonable. Show up with $500 cash and take her home.

If it'll get you riding, go for it. Modern components look different but they all do the same thing.

I would want to pay around $400, though.

Just sold my 2005 105-spec'ed bike for $750. The MSRP was a little higher than an Allez, but still. I think that's crazy and wouldn't have paid nearly that much. However, the buyer was thrilled and said they'd been looking for a long time?!
