A compact crank has 50 teeth in the big ring and 34 in the small ring. A standard has 53 in the big one and 39 in the small one. The biggest difference between them will be top speed and climbing ability. A compact crank will allow you climb easier but will be a bit slower than a standard. Many people nowadays will prefer a compact over a standard because of that reason. A compact crank with a wide cassette in the back will allow you to climb the steepest of hills and be less clunky and complicated than a triple. The loss of speed is not huge on a compact vs standard.

Some hubs are louder than others. Zipp hubs are loud. If I were you I would go out and check out as many bikes as you can in your price range. Maybe even see if there are some 09 models left over at deep discount. You might be able to get into a bike with better components or even a carbon frame. I know there is a store in my city that is clearing out 09 Cannondale Synapse Carbon 5's for $1500 and 09 Kestrel Evoke's for $1450 so might be something to keep on the lookout.

I think we all assumed your Fuji was at least Shimano 2200/2300. I don't blame you for wanting to upgrade. I would keep the Fuji for a rain bike because you will not get much for it if you sell it. Of the bikes that you listed, I think that Jamis offers the most bike for the money. Also look at Scott, Trek and Felt bikes as well as any other brands that your LBS carries. Like others have said, get a bike with at least 105 components. Keep in mind though that with bikes in your price range there is going to be something on the bike where a corner was cut. It is often times in the wheels, cranks and brakes. Are you using clipless pedals? This upgrade is a must.

I went to a bike shop today and saw the caad9 4 which is the same bb30 frame but with sram it was a 56 and it weight 17.? pounds. hes really giving me a good deal on a caad9 5 $1229. he also weighted a jamis zenith comp, carbon frame and it really impressed me that the aluminum caad9 4 weighs less than the jamis full carbon. wow

Might be hard to find 2010 models right now (unless its on the sales floor). Pretty much every company is out of bikes. 2011 stuff is coming just around the corner

Correct, many 2011 models will be in shops by July, and the pressure is on to ship early since everybody is out of 2010 inventory.

A compact is a double crank. By double it means that there are two rings on it. Compact is a designation for the amount of teeth the ring has vs a standard. I would say go with a compact crank instead of a standard for the better climbing ability. Compacts are more popular than standard nowadays.
