The thrill of defeat !! (agony of victory)

Ohhhhhhhhh man --- I almost got sucked in by over zealous ebay enthusiasm tonight

----- I do not need a borderline collectible machine that i cant ride at my current socio-economic status . Much like i really don't need to purchase fine art right now either, or anything like that

------ Colnago C-50 F/F with full matched Mapei acoutrement , and in my size no less --- It went to $1284 , -- my final bid was $1225 ---- as i was typing $1225 , i was thinking to myself what firearms i need to offload to front this (i also have a small collection of those) - as i likely wont be able to sell any of my bikes until spring

As i was typing in my bid , i started to think "What if this is counterfeit?" - as i am leery of anything carbon on ebay with the proliferation of the "Chinarellos" and other Chinese knockoffs sold through Alibaba -
-- Then i thought i could build this up and show up at the first spring metric century looking like a Clydesdale version of Andre Tchmil or Johan Museeuw

Anyway --- when the bidding closed i breathed a sigh of relief at being outbid on this one --- its trick as hell and if its real, such a neat machine (in my eyes) -- but going into the hole 3 weeks before Christmas is no bueno

What a beautiful bike. Who cares if its fake. when you are riding it, no one will know or care, but they will all say, damn man, looking at that guy on his white Colnago. Hey, it just maybe the the real deal.

I don't remember Tchmil ever riding a Colnago well, maybe in his CCCP days. they all rode Colnagos.

I may be a bit senile -- i thought he (Tchmil) rode for Mapei in '94 or 5 when he went just flat bonkers and reeled off 2 or 3 Classics victories in a row but i could be wrong , he rode for Lotto too somewhere in there

-- It'd be tough for me to ride that thing outside of a charity or ceremonial ride with all that World Champion stuff on there, but shoot -

I just imagine the fun the new owner will have in a few days when he unwraps that thing from the bike box -- whether its a smart purchase or not

How did I know this would be about an eBay action?

I'd be sad! That thing is amazing!

I know, I know -- that F/F is darn cool (beyond cool -- its 1979 John Travolta cool) -- but heck -- i'm building a new house and am in the last month of that saga - which means i'm tapped out and still have to figure out how to procure furniture and appliances --- LOL

Maybe i can fulfill my Italian dreams by buying a Bertazzoni range or some other boutique Italian appliance for the house to fulfill my need to be a bit "continental" ---

This is a case of right bike-wrong time. I am curious how high it would have got it if i had kept pushing though

I dunno, it's carbon after all. I don't think the Pinarello paint job means that much. Aren't they all more or less made in China these days?

Probs makes for a great riding bike (better than anything I have. Maybe?), but don't mortgage the farm; there'll be plenty more where that came from, I'm quite sure.

Not really at home in the C&V subforum, eh?

The problem with that Colnago, if not used as wall art, is that the rider would look foolish riding it in anything other than a lycra spandex kit. And we all know, in most cases, unless you are a former NCAA sized lineman:

The higher end Colnagos, 1 or 2 models- are still made in Italy, -- but there's a big difference between a made in China or Taiwan Colnago/Pinarello/ Specialized etc and a counterfeit with similar badging -- there has been talk of catastrophic failures with the clones, as well as exceptionally poor fit and finish and alignment issues --
-- Regarding C&V, - well its a classic collectible (maybe not to all ) , and by race bike standards, its outdated, - but this is a much more interesting crowd to bounce ideas off of than the road race forum -

--- Its clearly a different strokes for different folks paint job for sure --- i happen to like 'em garish and i guess always have since my first road bike in the early 90's (A LEmond with the Team Z replica neon paint scheme ) -- The flashy Colnago paint jobs have always caught my attention

LOL --- I'm so dumb that when my wife got home last night i showed the pic to her and proudly stated - "I did not buy this earlier this evening! Are you proud of me? " --- cold stare and then the sound of crickets

I had thought similar thoughts - although i do wear lycra - its the best tool for the job and has a purpose, so i just pull it on, suck it up and dont worry about it ----
-- but as a former trackie, i recall it was an unspoken taboo to wear World Champ's stripes, ride a gold bike or a bike with WC stripes , or wear pro team replica kit, ---- because track cycling is such a small community, there may be an actual World champ on the track at the same time as you, or somebody actually with Motorola may show up on any given Friday night while your wearing the Motorola team kit

But with a bike like that, i think i'd have to celebrate my "Clyde-dom" once or twice a year by hitting a circuit race with a XXXL Polka dot climber's jersey on

But as i was turning in, my ever supportive wife told me , "I cant wait till the trails dry out and it gets a little warmer so you can get out riding more and buying less" --- she's right, the boredom of the cold weather months wreaks havoc with the pocketbook

Ok, try it without the polka-dots, see if that works for you.

FWIW, the OP's frame is an Extreme Power not a C-50. Mine is an EC, which was the lightweight version.

These are fantastic frames with geometry very similar to a classic Colnago. I've ridden the hell out of this one for years (why it's been re-painted already).

Doooon't. they aren't that good. I know its a mid price range, but you can do so much better with other mfg's product. Look at American Range. Really good stuff for the price. Its Viking in sheep's clothing. IMO, the guts are better then Viking.

Isn't that a pretty Colnago?

colnago's been a bit flashy with their paint dating back to the later part of the 80s with the checkers and fading paint to the graphic Masterlights in the late 90s (I have a Casino yellow one which I am going to paint to a single color w my company name on the down tube). I am from the old days where just didn't wear WCS or team jerseys to a race (forbidden by USCF), so we just do not buy them. I see guys riding down the road with their decked out SKY kits down to the socks and Pinarellos. Funny how things changed? If I had that white Colnago,( I think that blue one is much better looking) I ride the hell out of it. I am too old, too tired to really care what others think of me. Most of the guys that come out on our staurday ride has been guys that raced, with a couple of Cat1 riders. Now, that ride is still going on, but most of them have a really shiny bike (nothing wrong with that) with matching wheels and what not. I show up on my Ridley with blue painter's tape holding parts of the handlebar tape in place, different wheels (how dare me to have an aero carbon wheel and a Krysium in the back all with different color tires ( I buy them on sale and never see what color they are). Oh, BTW, the wheels do match on my new TIME.

I have no idea that we btich about lycra? Seriously. I have been riding since I was a pimple faced teen when wool shorts were on its way out and lycra was the new hot thing. What wrong with lycra? Maybe because I don't ride my bikes to the market, have breakfast or anything like that. Get on outside my house and get off at my front door.

Bunch of great minds on this site, -- i was thinking when i posted that i was out at $1225, - someone would say that they see these change hands all day long for $700 bucks , or something equally absurd though.

Regarding my tastes -- i'm the loud husky guy who drinks a little too much and keeps everyone else entertained with crude stories and practical jokes at gatherings (you gotta have fun sometimes ) ---- so for me a paint scheme like that almost makes perfect sense. (with the exception of the WC stripes - but i cant imagine a bike put together like that would ever replace my daily driver)
