CicLAvia anyone?
Anyone wish to chime in on yesterday's CiLAvia event from Walt Disney Concert Hall to Hollywood Bowl?
We took our EuroMinis from Riverside to LA on the train and had an enjoyable, and HOT fall day CicLAvia experience.
Anyone else care to share their CicLAvia experience?
And for those of you in greater So-Cal who haven't experienced a CicLAvia....try one sometime!
On the Metrolink from Riverside to LALA land
A quick stop at LA's MacArthur Park

Kind of a hot, humid day. I went to one in Pasadena once, kind of fun.
I try not to go downtown unless I have to.

Ah, I always wondered what that middle section of the "bike car" is for - nothing but coolers and apparently euro mini bikes fit in that space!
Did anybody rent a metro bike to get around while you were out and about?

Took a jump bike in Santa Cruz, that worked out extremely well.

If they put on in the OC...it wouldn't be a CicLAvia anymore!

Yes. Metrobikes were everywhere. And in fact we met a family of 5 on the train who rented them and we saw them on the route enjoying the day on their rented bikes.

It was a few years back when CiclaVia's first downtown ride began. I drove there; parked my car in one of those Chinatown streets. Then rode the bike along the designated streets. It was early enough so it was great! No traffic and the streets were either closed off or being closed off. There were just a few other bike riders who took advantage of this early pre-event ride.
I knew going to L.A downtown would be messy, metro or no metro. But it was too early in Chinatown and no shops were open. I was hoping for some tea and dim sum. I had to use the bathroom and found one place where they were preparing the dim sum for the day. They let me use their toilet.
The other part of the morning was going near the start with all the booths that were being set-up. Nice talking with those folks. That's the other part of CiclaVia, I think is important or at least of some interest.
Then at a different CiclaVia, this time going to Boyle Heights, I stopped by the booth to get a fresh fruit drink. The teenage girl noticed my unusual helmet. It was that white Catlike helmet with those holes that look like Swiss cheese. She asked: "Does that special helmet make you go faster"? I told her no, but today its very hot and heat builds up when a rider goes fast. To that extent the helmet is designed in part to help with the heat problem. That in itself is how we as bike rider can help even a young teenage lady the design aspects of the helmets.

Don't get me wrong by my post above. I think these things are about as close as we're going to get in the way of supporting and promoting the sport to the general public. I'm all for it. I also agree with Garfield Cat that even the smallest most seemingly trivial piece of information may spark an interest in someone who may have never thought of getting on a bike. My problem is downtown Los Angeles. Although I"m sure with the cleared out streets and rerouting of traffic these events may make the area more palatable, but I'm not counting on it. I just have a really bad aversion to anything happening downtown.
