Sram Apex 1 x 11 Chainring
I just bought a 2018 Giant Toughroad SLR GX 0. It has a sram apex 1 x 11 drivetrain. Here is a link to my bike:
https://www.giant-bicycles.com/us/to...-slr-gx-0-2018
It comes stock with a 40 tooth chainring. If I want to change it to a 38 tooth chainring, will anything need adjusted? Will the same chain need shortened at all? Is it as easy as unbolting the 40 tooth chainring, and bolting on a 38 tooth, and I am done?
Also can you please direct me to a link for a compatible 38 tooth chainring.
Thanks so much for any responses...

I don't think so with the rear derailure clutch thing taking up slack.

^ This.
We often will switch rings through the season depending on the course, etc.
The only time you should ever run into chain length issues when changing gearing is if you increase it. Bigger chain ring or bigger cog. The it's possible the chain could be too short.

Great about being able to change it.
Can u point me to a 38 chainring that will work with my crankset. I’m confused as there are ones that mention spacing offset.

The usual Sram 1x chainrings (CX1, Force) have a 5 x 110mm PCD bolt circle. These are readily available.
But from looking at the pic of your bike you had a link to it appears they may have gone to a different, uneven bolt pattern.
Is this the case?

Well, looks like I am outta luck. I emailed SRAM and got this response back....SRAM USA (SRAM)
For the Apex 1 asymmetric BCD ring, we only offer rings in 40t, 42t, and 44t. We unfortunately don't offer a 38t ring for this crank.
Regards,
SRAM USA

It's been a few months though so always worth checking with Wolf Tooth and Praxis, Wicks, etc. to see if they have aftermarket of if SRAM has locked it down because of Assyemtric pattern being proprietary. If so just buy a new crank and sell that one. No one has time for SRAM telling you they think they know what you need more than you know what you need.
