Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

should I be putting grease on the chain?

The title is self explanatory. Obviously I'm relatively new to cycling. My bike is doing well and I want to keep it that way. Also is there anything else I need to do to the bike to keep it running well? Thanks!

No, grease will act like a dirt magnet. Clean your chain regularly and then lube with chain lube.

Grease will have a tendency to attract and hold a lot of dirt. Oil would be better and one of the commercial chain lubricants would be best. The bike shop will have something for you.

Since you can pick up a bottle of chain lube for $3.99, thats the way to go. If you ride in dirty dry conditions, get a dry lube. In wet or cleaner conditions, get a wet lube.

You may also find it useful to get a book on bicycle maintenance. I like the Park Tools book, and others on this forum have recommended the Lennard Zinn one.

No grease. Oil. Find a chain lube at the LBS.

+1

I use the kind that is both cleaner & lube.
After you put it on you wipe most of it off with a rag (along with a lot of dirt/grime that's stuck on the chain), so the chain is clean and dry when I start the ride and doesn't pick up much dirt.
