Being a commuter and looking to get a roadbike soon, I'm used to a 48 ring on my fixie.
I notice that those cyclocross guys use 48/34s alot. Anybody here use that combo?

I run that combo on my CX bike with a 12-27 cassette. The gearing isn't bad for the road -- easy to spin out on most downhills, but it's decent for flats and hills.

I used a 48/36 with a 12-25 cassette on my crosscheck as a commuter. This was in Austin and I had maybe 50 yards of flat on my 11 mile commute. I would spin out the 48-11 in the mid upper 30's and tuck and coast the rest. Every day I would range from about 8 mph to 45 mph. It worked good.
