Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Any move from Campy to SRAM?

I have a Campy triple that works well but have considered moving to a compact double. I had thought that I would stick with Campy because I like it.

However, I have seen some of the innovations that SRAM has introduced and it has me considering moving to SRAM Red. SRAM Apex now has a 32-11 cassette and within a year or two SRAM Red will have a DR that accepts this cassette. I would have thought that jumps this big between gears would like it unusable, but the reviews say it works well since the biggest jumps are on the larger cogs of the cassette.

My questions:

Can SRAM Red jump more than one cog at a time?

Is SRAM rebuildable?

I Googled these questions but couldn't find answers.

I think some guy around here named Richinpeoria has switched from Campy to SRAM and never looked back

edit: I think SRAM can downshift 2 cogs at once, but only upshifts one at a time. However the upshifts are crazy fast.

I also think SRAM is not rebuildable (referring to the controls)

actually three at a time. but as a cat 2 friend says: if you have to downshift more than two cogs at a time, you aren't paying attention to the road

edit: also, forgot to add. sram xx (top-of-the-line mtb group) is fully compatible with sram road groups. the 11-32 cassette is also available at the pg-1070 level (force/rival). fwiw, the apex RD is good enough to be used on the recent Giro.

you can also do it by accident sometimes if you give the lever too much pressure.

Three is enough. I only down shift more than one cog at a time if I am climbing a really nasty hill with a big drop on the other side.

Triples are for loaded touring bikes.
Going to a compact double is significantly nicer to use, but you do realize that Campagnolo has already had the equivalent triple setup for a long time. Campy makes medium cage rear derailleurs and a 12-29 cassette (used to be 13-29) that gets you a hair lower than a standard 30x25 triple setup. Seriously, a 34x29 will get you up anything all day long.

Any really, if you have the need for such gearing, the gear spacing is really not a problem. The 50x12 gear spinning out at a high cadence is mighty fast. Usually anything more and its faster to tuck and coast.

3 up, 1 down (at a time), but none of it looks like jewelry.

Well, when I first started riding I couldn't make it over the hills where I live without a triple. Now, I don't really need the small chain ring often. The only down side I see to a triple is that they weigh more. If I needed to buy a new bike today, I would buy a compact double, but the groupset I have now is paid for and that is hard to argue with.

The down side to a compact double is that the gears are not as close as I get with my triple. A 12-29 on a Campy 11 is about the same as the 13-26 I have on my triple.

I have no problem with the triple but it does weigh more than a compact.

One more thing. What I like about the Campy compact is that with a 12-29, I could stay in the big chain ring 98% of the time. I can make it over most of the hills I need to climb on the big cogs. It is only when I need to climb long ass hills that I need to shift into the smaller chain ring.

What is it you like about SRAM better? I really like Campy but I am not married to it.

When you get older you're going to eat those words, son.

That's if you make it.
