been getting in decent running shape again, only to experience pain in my tibia after running last night. i've had 4 stress fractures in my tibia at this point so i'm naturally fearing the worst (my first stress fracture was actually what caused me to buy a bike to begin with). really frustrating because no matter what i try to do, however careful i am or dedicated to doing prehab/stretching/physio/recovery etc i always seem to get stress fractures after 60 miles per week (which is relatively low mileage TBH, so its super annoying).
i took today completely off from any training, including biking, and started eating like crap (had some french toast in the morning and birthday cake in the afternoon). whenever i fear an injury i always go into a downward spiral where i just feel like "whats the point?" with training and regress completely which is really frustrating but its hard mentally. tomorrow morning i'll hopefully get in the bike workout i missed this afternoon and then maybe when i test out my leg running i'll find that i was just sore from the trails on the weekend and i havent actually broken my leg again, but its just stressful. cycling has proven to be a much easier sport overuse-injury wise for me, but i have trouble fully abandoning running while its still something i'm pretty good at if i dont get injured.

happens from the amateur to the very talented. unless you're REALLY carefully and closely managed or an aberration, it's hard to stay injury-free.
it's the beauty of cycling.
well, i have accomplished neither. sub 4:00 mile has more recognition from the average person you tell though. just saying i'm close tends to impress people.
i'm curious whether in absolute terms a sub 15:00 OLH would be more impressive or not. only 5 people on strava have done it (and then there's eric heiden...), but there's people that don't use strava/did it before strava/don't live in the area that would probably be able to do it. the 4 minute mile is much more 'accessible' - just find a track anywhere and run the 4 and a bit laps required. that said, as of 2013 only ~1300 people have actually ran a sub 4:00 mile (compare to ~4000 who have climbed everest). if everyone in the world could take a crack at OLH (including the who world tour/pro conti/continental pros etc), I wonder how many would be sub 15?

so many much more difficult peaks to climb.
a guy i ride with from time to time is older (mid-50s) but still pretty damn good. i learned he ran a sub-4:00 in college. that was a HUGE deal.
a neighbor of mine has done it. he's pretty young--post-college and just got on some 'pro' running team out of boulder. i'm happy for him.
seeing people who are capable of running those times is truly impressive. they're so graceful.
it's also interesting how 4-5' power for cycling doesn't really correspond to running.

I really don't want to spend money on it...does any one have spitting in the soup in the discard pile?

while running is dumb, running literature tends to be significantly better than cycling literature.

yes.
I really usually only read library books.
btw, I'm old. Old guys do generally have a bit more common sense than the younger cyclists.

How many surgeries have you had because of cycling? Cycling is beautiful but injury avoidance is not why.

That is a pretty reasonable point. My knees may not hurt from repetitive stress injuries, but my elbow doesn't bend all the way and I've been assured it will grow arthritic. I have a tweaked shoulder as well. Who knows what else will appear. Riding can be relatively injury free, but the earth is hard, and gravity sucks.

the point is overuse injuries & biomechanics.
it is MUCH harder to overtrain in a way that causes stress fractures and ligament/tendon damage in cycling than running.

I can't run anymore; I probably can but I got hurt so much. I've had a peroneal tendon surgery and an achilles tear. Next few years if its not figured out naturally I will get my back fused.
Both occurred during running but imo it was caused by sciatica and issues. I can get away with this stuff on the bike but running you have to be spot on with form and mechanics.
I was a pretty fast runner (16:10 5k) but that was before everything started falling apart.
Its funner being an average cyclist than a fast runner. There's too little social interaction with running.

Those are some gorgeous pictures @Heathpack. The one of the river looks like a damn painting. I'm jealous.
Ha! I told him that was the luckiest light ever, with the dark buildings on either side of the river and the sun shining brightly right on the yellow house in the middle. Nope, that light is absolutely incredible.
That's what makes this such a photogenic city. LA is just completely bright with very flat lighting continuously. But here the sun is in & out all day. It adds this whopping texture to everything, every time I turn my head it seems like there's something quite striking.

All true, but dont ignore trauma. Gary's elbow was reconstructed by a surgeon that three great othopoedic surgeons refused to treat. My left collarbone was shattered into six pieces and rebuilt with a removable stainless screw. We all recover, but to what degree, both physically and mentally? We should never forget the big picture.

I'm glad it's hard to get a driver's license to keep people from stealing my identity, but damn. This is ridiculous. And I can't register the cars until I have a driver's license, except that my car expires in NC in a couple weeks. Not much I can do about it until I have all the documents I need.

That riding a bicycle is dangerous.
A lovely girl I know was hit by a car last week on a road that I am on all the time. Brain damage, broken everything, induced coma. Hit & run, but the cops tracked down the driver (who apparently stopped, got out of her car, saw what happened, and drove away). She was riding into the sun on a busy road (299 @ Butterville) and honestly you can't see anything out your windshield there at the wrong time of day.
Her dad was hit by a car last year and broke his hip. He's still not fully recovered.
There is a lot of throwing in the towel and selling the road bike type of conversation among local cyclists.

That's awful. Glad they caught the driver at least, but my cynical side says it doesn't matter, they won't suffer any consequences.

Here in the Boulder extended area, it seems like we have about 1 cyclist fatality per year, give or take. It is certainly something I think about often, and I also have heard a few "sell the road bike" conversations from buddies. I think road riding now is far more dangerous than it was just a few years ago because of texting while driving.
I wonder how the math balances out between my greater health and the risks I assume to have it.
PS - the most recent was the competitor fatality during the bike leg of Ironman Boulder a month ago.

I hope the rider in question winds up OK. That just sucks.
edit: i hope this isn't the same person that hit the rider. she just got a new car and probably isn't used to the size of it and everything...

Mr. Heathpack says to me, "too bad the sun is going down and the buildings near to us are in the shadows, that picture would be so much better earlier in the day."

Selling and buying a house is really testing my patience. Between dealing with the FDIC to release a loan from a bank that went under in 2009 to setting up a VA loan (hello paperwork!), I think the actual physical move will be a piece of cake if it ever happens.
Never. Moving. Again!

The road riding/racing is terrific too and there are 3 or 4 different group rides that leave the Commie pool starting at 9:30 Saturday morning.
