The “why” is so your fanny stays fresh and happy throughout your ride.

For me, the Charge hurt like hell, and the Brooks doesn't. Others may have the opposite experience. Let your arse decide.

I had a charge spoon on my main road bike, but I wanted something a bit flatter. Now I have a Fabric Scoop Flat. Same company, but fabric has more riding position and size options.

It is all personal preference. I didn't care for the Brooks B17 (~400mi) or C17 (~200mi) when I tried them. However, the Spoon works great for me when mountain biking, but was only pretty good on the road. I tried and didn't like a Scoop shallow, but have yet to try a radius.

I’ve tried a lot of saddles. I have a lot hanging in my garage (worth more than most people spend on bikes- some saddles singularly so), I have two fabric scoop shallows on my bikes. They fit my butt and don’t rub the butt/thigh crease.

I have a Radius Elite on my MTB and it’s pretty comfortable.

Something to keep in mind is that no matter how well a saddle fits you, almost all of them are going to cause some level of discomfort on a long bike ride. The important thing is how you feel AFTER you get off the bike. And on the following day.

A lot of people swear by their brooks b17 saddles. Some won't even ride a bike without one, and go to the trouble of putting a b17 on each one of their bikes.

The brooks c17 saddles do not appear to be built to last. I have had two. If you have one or you get one, pay attention to the rubber around the rivets. The more miles you put on the saddle, the more that rubber starts to stretch. I am not a heavy rider. I am very thin and lean, yet I have experienced this problem after only 1,000 miles on both saddles. Unfortunately, one of my saddles was stolen and so I did not get to complete the experiment. The other c17 I have is on a bike that I don't ride as much.

Also pay attention to the nose of the c17 saddle, because that is another very common area of wear. This is well documented. You can easily find pictures online of c17 nose wear. I think these people are probably making that area wear faster by riding too far forward on the saddle, but I'm only guessing.

Sounds like me. All of my bikes are fitted with the B17, which, after 4 decades of riding, I have found to be the most comfortable saddle. When I first got into riding, all the tourers and long distance riders chose Brooks saddles, but I scoffed at them, using more "modern" types. But I eventually was indoctrinated into the Brooks cult, and found them to be every bit as comfortable as the old farts used to claimed them to be.

If you wear good shorts (which usually cost more than a good saddle), then you'll find minimalist saddles comfortable. If you don't care much for bike shorts, Brooks saddles are quite comfortable for getting around town. A pair of decent (not expensive) shorts makes them even more comfortable

I like Brooks Pros from the '70's. Open nose design. I also have a couple French Lionrone saddles from the '50's that are absolutely amazing in construction and comfort. Probably never see leather of that quality again.
