Walt Grotz at CycleSport in NJ then offered cadets the same model for a great price in 1974 for their personal bikes (the 10 belonged to the school team), which is when I got mine in blue. Still have the five-cog Regina freewheel and the Campy components, although in a box because I converted mine to Campy fixed gear about 15 years ago, which I still ride regularly.

When and where did you acquire your Rolls?

Mike
I was a retailer back in the 70's. Had three locations in Brooklyn.
I bought this as my personal bike from The Bike Rack in Queens, NY.
I liked it because of the Colnago connection. Mine is serial #2 .
I raced it in Prospect Park in some of the Criteriums the BBC used to run back then.
I refinished it about 20 years ago and never got around to putting it back together.
So whoever buys it gets it as-is along with some other goodies and extras.

So Mike, were you on the USMA team that rode the Lake Luzerne classic in about 74?

Mr. Spadoni,

Well, I can assure you that I never got to Switzerland in 1974. But I wish I had!

One of the benefits of sheltering in place is that I moved ahead on my pet project.
Still a work in progress but you get the idea.

Tires are here. Just waiting on tubes. Freewheel will go on when I mount the new tires. Brake levers and cables have been installed and adjusted.
Chain needs clean and lube.

Looks like a nice project.
A competent bike shop should be able to straighten the fork for you.
Only problem you might have is the metal will be stressed and fatigued. I don't know if I would ride it very hard.

Nice! Looks exactly like my first real bike, bought at Cyclesport in Park Ridge NJ, probably around 1972. Had a Huret Allvit rear derailleur as best I can recall.
On the fork, here's how I straightened one, and some follow-up discussion from more knowledgeable members that I thought was pretty helpful.

Good luck!

Why have I never thought remove the levers from the brake clamp...it was such a fuss to get the handlebar tape on properly on my last build

Beautiful bike!

Beautiful bike!
If you're like me you put the bar tape on last after you've figured out the perfect spot for the levers.
Maybe some people are lucky and have that figured out in advance.

Nope. I installed them, lined them up then uninstalled them.
One bolt on each. Took less than a minute.

Thanks!
Its coming along fine. Last touches later today. I'll post some completed photos later.

Yep. With the levers out of the way, it make life a lot easier. And as you can see.... a clean wrap.

1970's Rolls

Recently purchased a rolls bicycle owner had no info on the bike but it looked in good condition. Will post pictures once I cleared to do so.

Now I realize you must be referring to Lake Luzerne on the Hudson River in northern New York. That must have been sometime after June 1975 if it was a USMA West Point team involved. During my time on the club and team at West Point 1973-1975, we participated in several races at Rockland Lake Park north of Nyack, and we sponsored several races on the USMA grounds at Round Pond and along the Hudson, but never any races up near Saratoga.

You got the location correct, Northern New York. It could have been 75 . The race was held in October, so you would have moved on by then.

West Point cycle team Rolls photos?

Our collegiate team at West Point used them 1973-1975, and for a few years more after I graduated in 1975. I still have mine and love riding it, although I converted it to a fixed-gear 16 years ago. I have photos of the original bike, the reconditioned Rolls, and information I'd be glad to share about the dozen or so Campy-equipped Rolls that we obtained through Cyclesport in Park Ridge, NJ, and the early days of collegiate racing that the West Point team was active in promoting on the East Coast in in the mid-seventies.

More to follow soon,

Mike
Hi Mike, I'm a bit late to this thread (hopefully it's still open). I recently acquired a Rolls in a sorry state that I'm restoring. It was almost complete and came with mostly Campy parts (except pedals (missing), QR skewers, and brakes (Weinmann Type 500)) and probably not with the original front wheel. I'm curious about the West Point connection. Do you have any photos of the West Point cycle team or team members with the Rolls from the 1970's? AFAIK there are least three variants of the Rolls, (1) a low end version, usually blue with Cyclesport on top tube, (2) a moderately high end what I have (grey, chrome only on fork crown), and even a nicer looking Rolls Colnago (clover leaf on fork, chrome on fork and chain stay, see bulgier dot net slash pics slash bike slash Catalogs slash Rolls(Colnago)-73. Thanks. - Frank

Frank,
I'm going through old Kodak slides now and getting them scanned. I know I have some good photos of college teams, races, and bikes from the 1973-1975 era. I will post them when I get the scans.

That is a reverse color scheme, but a very similar frame, to what I bought from Cyclesport back around 1972. Mine (stolen from a locked shed in our yard while family was on vacation) had Huret derailleurs as best I recall, but otherwise had the chrome "socks" front and back, and a cottered crank. My first road bike, and I think Cyclesport must have gotten a lot of folks started on cycling with the Rolls line of bikes back then!

What would one be worth today?

I have one in nice condition. Needs some TLC Awesome restoration project. Thinking about selling it. Write me if you have any information on pricing or any interest. Thank you, Christopher. I unfortunately can’t ad any photos now as a newbie. I will when I’m able to.
