Horrible news. No words I can add to make the situation better.
Near a tunnel on the greenway? Makes me wonder what the motive was, how the attack was staged, and what was used to attack the cyclist.

In sum, he lived a quiet and uncomplicated life.
Hope his family finds peace.

The American Tobacco Trail through downtown Durham has the worse reputation, but this is the 2nd attack I remember connected with the Raleigh part of the greenway. Scary & shocking ! I hope they have an arrest soon.

I typically ride alone, but it's probably a better idea to ride with a partner. You never know.

I just don’t get it. Who would hang out on a bike path or trail just to assault somebody? I can’t grasp that mentality.

I think it means that there is enough violence going on in the Raleigh news, that he is not surprised by random assaults. Like that it happens a good bit you know?

Around here, it would be people coming into town to have a little fun and engage in violence. The criminals can't afford to live here. You will occasionally hear about nearby rural communities that think the opposite is going to happen, but that's ridiculous.

Green belts in my area have become havens for homeless encampments, and most local residents have now learned to avoid venturing into them. The local MUPs that skirt any green belt are usually walked in groups, with certain sections being avoided by many MUP users during daylight hours, and with the MUPs near any green belt being practically unused at night.

We all need to be careful and aware of what's happening around us. I am flabbergasted by the lone cyclists and runners on remote paths who are plugged into their devices and never realize that I've approached them until I've passed.

112 miles of greenway in Raleigh so it would be a big challenge to achieve sufficient coverage. In Durham County, where I live, the City partners with a volunteer Trail Watch group, whose members routinely patrol the MUPs. I've been a member of this group for a few years and know that the trail users do appreciate us being around.
