Horrible news. No words I can add to make the situation better.

Near a tunnel on the greenway? Makes me wonder what the motive was, how the attack was staged, and what was used to attack the cyclist.

In sum, he lived a quiet and uncomplicated life.
Words I hope can one day be said in my obit.

Hope his family finds peace.

The American Tobacco Trail through downtown Durham has the worse reputation, but this is the 2nd attack I remember connected with the Raleigh part of the greenway. Scary & shocking ! I hope they have an arrest soon.

This may have been true about the ATT 10 years ago, but there have been very few incidents since. Still, reputations die hard. I'm part of an organized trail watch group that partners with Durham govt. to monitor the trail. Other than observations and reports of trail users behaving badly, serious crime is rare. That said, what happened on the Walnut Creek trail could happen anywhere and that freaks me out. I heard that Durham police were active the past few days monitoring the ATT, probably in response to the Raleigh incident.

I typically ride alone, but it's probably a better idea to ride with a partner. You never know.

I just don’t get it. Who would hang out on a bike path or trail just to assault somebody? I can’t grasp that mentality.

Criminals do what criminals do. It happens on occasion at the park trails around here, too.

By definition, Raleigh is a city. If it had happened in the neighboring county, where I live in residential community. I would have been really surprised.

I think it means that there is enough violence going on in the Raleigh news, that he is not surprised by random assaults. Like that it happens a good bit you know?

Around here, it would be people coming into town to have a little fun and engage in violence. The criminals can't afford to live here. You will occasionally hear about nearby rural communities that think the opposite is going to happen, but that's ridiculous.

Green belts in my area have become havens for homeless encampments, and most local residents have now learned to avoid venturing into them. The local MUPs that skirt any green belt are usually walked in groups, with certain sections being avoided by many MUP users during daylight hours, and with the MUPs near any green belt being practically unused at night.

Yeah, I hear what you're saying; however it's a huge generalization to claim that cities are less safe than suburban/rural areas. I've heard a number of anecdotal reports of assaults on cyclists down there in Chatham County. Had you lived there in 2007, you would have been appalled by the murder of 2 women in peaceful Fearrington Village. The point is that random violent crime can happen anywhere. SBI crime statistics for 2017 (latest available) show that the Chatham County murder rate was higher than that for Wake county.

We all need to be careful and aware of what's happening around us. I am flabbergasted by the lone cyclists and runners on remote paths who are plugged into their devices and never realize that I've approached them until I've passed.

112 miles of greenway in Raleigh so it would be a big challenge to achieve sufficient coverage. In Durham County, where I live, the City partners with a volunteer Trail Watch group, whose members routinely patrol the MUPs. I've been a member of this group for a few years and know that the trail users do appreciate us being around.
