Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

Tire size for potential wet/muddy gravel race?

I have panaracer gravel king 35mm and 40mm tires. Currently have the 35mm installed. I have an upcoming gravel even that may end up being very wet/muddy. Will there be much difference going to a 40mm? I haven't been caught in the rain yet out gravel biking so not really sure.

It depends!
In my home area, the roads are hard packed so rain just results in a thin layer of sliminess on top. 35mm would be fine as long as there is enough tread to shed that slime. YMMV

I just did muddy/gravel ride over weekend. I came to conclusion that using my riddlers 45c with mud was bad choice. I will be purchasing a second wheelset dedicated for mud. Looking for suggestion on good mud clearing tire 36-40mm size.

going to a larger tire will also reduce your mud clearance between the frame, so pick your poison I’ve run a 40mm tire in mud before and have had it stop from spinning because of the mud buildup between tire and frame.

Curious how the event went for you?

challenging. I definitely needed at least the 40mm tire. It was a very hilly course. Almost 7000 ft of climbing in 63 miles. The first half was better suited to a mountain bike. Very rocky both on ascent and descent. Next year I may put on size 43 tires as I have clearance.

Wow, wish I had hills like that around here in MI... Sounds like a course for a 650b bike or something like the Salsa Cutthroat maybe. You didn't mention flatting, so hopefully you made it across the course successfully. Better luck next year I guess?

yep. Cutthroat would have worked well. I’ll definitely have larger tires next year which hopefully will help. My bike being steel is a bit heavy.
