Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

2009 Giant Defy 3 (not sure on year or Defy #)

There is asking price of $615 on what I believe to be a 2009 Giant Defy 3. Here are my pictures taken on my phone (I realized in the future, I should take the bike profile with the bike facing the right...):

Sorry for the bad quality (iPhone 5). Next time I'll use a real camera.

The reason I think it's a 2009 Giant Defy 3 is because the paint job look exactly like official picture from the Giant webpage (archive 2009):

https://www2.giant-bicycles.com/en-us...llections_id=4

The previous owner has obviously added some upgrades. From what I can tell, he installed various minor upgrade such as a wireless sensor, multiple refractors, bottle holder, etc. I'm not sure if he upgraded any components (perhaps someone with a more trained eye can tell?).

So here are my questions:
  1. I know the 2013 Giant Defy's have all gotten good reviews, so how different is the Defy 3 from 2009 to 2013?
  2. If the model is 2009, then how much wear and tear can be seen from the pictures?
  3. And overall is $615 a fair asking price?
Thanks for reading!

Not classic nor vintage.

For information on modern bikes, just head to bikepedia.

Was only $800 new, for a four year old (soon to be five) SORA equipped bike, no way. Year end closeout prices should get you close on a brand new one if you shop around.

Thanks for the info on Bikepedia. I didn't even know about that site. That'll help me out a lot when looking for used modern bikes.

In my local market, ~$425 would be fair (if it fits you really well).

I had a 2009 Defy 2 that I sold in Feb of last year. It was on Craigslist for 2 months and I had to keep dropping the price because I didn't get any interested buyers. Ended up selling it for $500.00.

Components look like they're completely stock. Shifters are probably Sora (you can tell by thumb buttons). $615 seems way high.

Thanks guys. I ended up buying a 2012 Marin Stelvio T3 Apex for $1400 new on eBay. I didn't even know there was a blue book for bikes. The book said $1235 (https://www.bicyclebluebook.com/searc...spx?id=3026871), but I guess they are assuming a used bike?

you got a good buy, congrats on the purchase. A pic of the bike would be nice. Yes, BBB show prices for the bike as used.

Thanks! Here is the eBay link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/380690793013...84.m1423.l2649

Are the Marin Stelvio models just for 2012? I noticed on BBB that there are no other Stelvio models for other years. Any ideas why?

BBB does a good job at gathering data, but lack of data does not imply "non-existence."
