My wife continues to ride her '14 Surly Troll with road slicks (and loves it) than getting a proper new road/gravel bike..

This bike is a bit if a mongrel; I used whatever part works for me with no other consideration, including cost. The monstercross frame was only $500, but it has 9.6.9 tubing, the thinnest I have found in my size. It is very lively, fun and smooth.
The Surley fork is stiffer than the one that came with the frame, but with the wide tires, it really improves the handling.

I can't stand that stupid motto "Racing sucks." Like we cyclists don't already have enough bs to contend with we have to put down one kind of riding to elevate another. It's ridiculous.

I'll have to look up the differences between my 65cm Black Mountain fork and your low trail. Interested to see the geometey.
thanks for the pics!

Lovely cross check. I wanted one for years, a buddy once let me ride his and I knew it would be my next bike. When that time finally came, I ended up buying a straggler.
Ive also drank the koolade, I love my Straggler. It’s a beast of a bike.

Hey Sloar, just curious: I ride a Cross Check now and love it. However, I think there's a new bike on my horizon later this year (keeping the CC though--may re-configure it a different way for kicks). The RLT steel has long been a bike that intrigued me, but I've never seen one in the flesh to actually try. What do you like about the CC better than the RLT you had?

I hate the Surly name. I mean who wants to project being a jerk? Sounds like something marketers came up with to sell to pre teen skaters in the 90s.
But I really like my Krampus.

Racing in itself does not suck, in fact it can be quite awsome, and I’d bet that Surly would agree with that. What does suck, however, is that the bike industry (in general) is enslaved to satisfying racing more than any other facet of (serious) cycling.

I just drank the Kool-Aid, grape. Added another full figured girl to the stable - Bruised Ego Purple Krampus. Other than having to buy the $22 Monkey Nuts V3 spacer to keep the wheel from shifting under hard braking, I am really liking it. Now to find a saddle,

I dunno. I've had a Cross Check for most of this season, does what I ask it to do, but somehow, the kool-aid isn't taking effect. I had it out on gravel this morning, quite frighteningly twitchy downhill (not noticeable on pavement), and the thing is heavy as a pig.
I guess that's why they build so many different bike- we can all find one that floats our boat. Not sure this one does.
Now that BMC Monstercross- that has my interest.

Drank the Kool-Ade and loving it! Cross Check. Best bike since my P15 Paramount!! Found used on craigslist. 300 or so documented miles. Mechanic owned. XT upgrades. I was very happy with it for $600!

I'd have a Surly right now if they hadn't run out of the "rhymes with orange" color Monkeys just as I was ready to buy my MTB. I'm happy with my Salsa, it does all the same things, but it surely does not have the cachet.
