Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

What’s your all-around urban gearing? In gear-inches, please!

That should only matter with regard to skid patches on fixed gear if you do that sort of thing. 48/17 would spread wear among 17 skid patches while 48/18 would only create three patches. So you would wear the tire out the tire more quickly.

This page makes it easy...

Nothing wrong with it, 48/18 used to be a really common gear for UK racers and club riders. Prime numbers and even/odd only matter if you skid.

i have gone from 46 x 17 to 48 x 17 (75.3 GI) and sometimes I find myself going faster than I want ............ I guess it takes a while to adjust the cadence

72 GI with my fat tires. At 61 years old this might be my pinnacle.

38x16, 700x35 tires=about 65 inches. I’m 68 YOA with dicey knees, so I have to take it easy.

When I had one I ran 39x16 (66 gi) fixed and 39x18 (59 gi) freewheel. I live in a fairly hilly area.

About 76. I'm using what came on my bike. 46T x 16 freewheel/fixed 700x25 tires. Its is lacking in the top speed department as I'm used to riding my geared bikes in 50 x 17.

There's no skidding on my bike as I think it’s stupid, I have front brake that works great.

If I figured it right (17/53) on 700c wheels with 25's, my gear inches equals 84. Our terrain is flat with just a few bumps. So to get up any kind of hill, I am standing up to crank harder.
