80s Colnago

Hi all,
I bought this as a frameset and built it up as you see. I bought it not knowing what model it was, and still don't know. I want to say it's mod to late 80s. Campy drop outs and chrome headtube lugs. Panto throughout. I would like help with what model it is, approx year and value. Thanks!

I was going to say "Superissimo" because of the head lugs but then saw the BB shell negating the application of a chain stay bridge.
I also think it might be a repaint because the decals don't look like the right vintage for the frame construction.
Check the tubes for ribbing in the BB. If so then it is a mid '80 Nuovo Mexico(?)

That fork looks 90's to me.

I would agree that it looks early 90's based on fork and component's.

No mounts for bottle holder on seat tube though, so <'88 at the very least.

With that top-top brake cable my money is on a Super Piu.

Or very early Precisa fork with one of the last no mount point frames?
No one can pinpoint exactly when the first Precisas became available.

When you pull that bottom bracket (to swap out the Shimano bottom bracket) feel around for ridges.
SL=Piu, SLX=Superissimo.

Though my money is still on it being a Piu

I was not aware that internal cable routing (Piu) overlapped with single bottle braze on. I do wonder if the fork was a replacement.

I was told that it was raced by a Scandinavian rider in the pro tours back in the day (late 80s I think). Not sure how to verify.

Sorry about the Shimano bb, it was the only Italian thread on hand. The rest of the group was just what I decid ed to build it as. Fork could easily not be original.

Any idea on frame value? Thinking of selling it, but I also don't have enough miles on it yet to make an informed decision in that regard.

This one does have a bit of actually been raced vibe to it. As for the frame the market is way down so I would say $250-300 for the frame and fork. Do mention this is ligit standards race bike.

That seems very low.
A Precisa in this good a shape alone will fetch that.

Even over here (NL) where used classic bicycles are relatively cheap, that would sell for >€500 frameset only.
(and a few weeks later reappear all built up on one of the classic bicycle vendors sites for3-4 times that.)

Couldn't whatshernameagain@colnago.com help you with the serial# though?

As far as value , it depends on finding the right buyer. Right now it could take a while as the market is not good ….at all! Not many folks looking for vintage bikes anymore it seems.

Thanks everybody for the comments and feedback. I might try to find a period correct campy group to put on it eventually but I'm going to ride it as built for now, and I'll probably hang onto it for a bit. I know very little about 80s bikes and very little about Colnago, so I appreciate the info!

Oh, if you're keeping it as a rider, totally ride it as built and enjoy. Only thing I'd change (assuming everything is working) would be to put a strap on mount for a second bottle cage on it (and maybe saddle/consumables as needed).

- the bike looks good as it sits -- the group looks 9 speed to me, which is a bit late for this frame, but not too much - i think Campagnolo 9 speed with thatstyle brake hood debuted in 1996 - so it would be very probable for a guy with a late 80's vintage frameset (which would have been C-Record , or victory/Triomphe era) to upgrade to the latest and greatest in that time frame

PErsonally i like the looks of the early 90's 8 speed Ergopower groups , ---- but your build looks nice and well sorted
