creative ways to retire an old helmet?
I have an old helmet that has never been crashed, but it's time to replace it anyway: the straps are frayed, the padding is thrashed, and the shell is yellowed. Anyone know any interesting ways to destroy it? Hit myself in the head with a hammer while wearing it? Run it over with my car? Washing machine?

Mrs. Road Fan teaches K-12 music, and needed a strap-on helmet so the kids could make a dragon head, for a roller-blading dragon (for the good students, what production? She loves Mozart, hint!). It worked like a charm, and there's one less old helmet in the house!!!

Viking funeral. Put it on a small raft, douse it in gas, and push it out to sea on fire. Not so great for the environment, but worth it IMHO.

1+ Donate it to science.
Put a little drag chute (just enough to orient it, not enough to slow it down significantly) on the back to make certain that the helmet hits first. Have an observer on the ground film the impact at close range.
Myself, I retired two helmets by destroying them. I found something out that was really useful. One was an old taped-on shell helmet, and it was destroyed with one good stomp of my foot. Shattered into several shards. The other was a newer in-molded shell helmet and it took several stomps and much general abuse before it was deemed destroyed, and even then, it was still in good enough shape to strap to my head (not that I'd advise anyone to wear a cracked helmet for crash protection though). New helmet technology is more than smoke and mirrors.
I've also field tested two helmets while racing, but that's a different story.

I had three helmets that I decided were too old, since I could get a new one for $10.
I put them in the car, and when I saw someone riding a bike without a helmet I stopped and offered them one. Didn't take long to give them away, and I think the recipients might actually wear them.

if you have a shop/work area, you could always fill in the holes and use it as a catch all when working on your bike. Maybe mount some "legs" on it to keep it from tipping over...

why not use the old helmet as a front rack, or use them as painners, as a high vizz helmet cover. go Martha Stuart on the thing. make a tool box out of it. turn it into a sculpture and decorate your garden or mantel piece. halloween costume for your dog. wear it when you drive a car, extra safety.
saftey test would be cool, but you have no control. unless you want spend +500dollars on new and used helmets made in the past 20 years

My brother displays his crashed helmet on the wall, though it did save his head from a Fedex Truck.

2. Place old helmet in trash can
3. Close trash can
4. Have a cold one, you earned it
