Ok I don't follow, I thought the Eno hub takes care of the chain tension. So what do I do with the rear wheel if I buy a full road bike and strip the extras?

You build a new wheel using the Eno hub. You use the Eno hub to adjust chain tension

There would be little point buying a complete road bike and re-configuring it IMO as you would be stripping/replacing half the components.

Separate question, which, if any, frames are NOT made in Asia? Any US or Euro made SS frames?

Well if you're trying to keep things inexpensive you're going to need to keep a patient eye towards the used market. Even then it might not be realistic. Also keep an open mind about the weight of your bike. If the bike is fun, comfortable, practical, and you like the way it looks, it's REAL easy to forgive a couple extra pounds.

well, regardless of whether you buy a new road bike complete and strip it of what you don't want , or just a new frame and fork and buy new or used components, or leftover's from previous projects, you are going to have to address the issue of chain tension, because new road bikes don't have a decent (and chain tensioners are indecent) way to do it. now, if you bought a pre 90's road bike (with horizontal dropouts), complete or not, your chain tensioning problems disappear. no ENO amigo.

recently, i contacted Habanero (ti semi custom frame maker out of florida), and asked the owner (via email) whether i had to pay the custom price for a road bike if all i really wanted was to substitute the vertical dropouts for track ends and delete ALL the extraneous welded on paraphernalia. IOW no bottle bosses, no cable stops, no brake housing guides, no nothing. he said no problem, he would just charge the regular price for the standard frame.

it sounded good to me, but i went for the CF noname chinese route instead. the ti was and is a good option. maybe it would be worthwhile looking into.

If its a road frame, just use the hanger for a surly singlator (sp?).......

you can pick up carbon road frames on ebay for sub400. I actually hear they're pretty good quality. If you built it right, even in your price range, maybe a tad over, you could probably be under 13lbs.

I'm not sure how light those ENO hubs are. Might be a consideration...

This is true. Aiming for sub 15lb means you've gotta be a weight weenie at every step.

They are not the lightest hub, but I laced mine to a Zipp 404 Clydesdale tubular, which came out to 3.xx lbs with tire.

cross post - check out my scott, 14.08 lbs with an ENO hub:

https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...=#post13833908

i bought the used frameset off CL for about $400 and cannibalized most parts off my other bikes, and bought a few parts of CL.

I Really like that frame so yeah if I could find a clean used one, I don't mind doing that.

How often do you guys need to adj the chain tension? Just wondering if this is something you do every ride or just once in a while.

Generally you just set it and it's fine until the next time you pull your back wheel off or something.

I just gotta add another +1 for the Wabi Lightning. Its pretty dang light, most builds average about ~16 pounds right? Plus, it is designed to be a SS/Fixed bike with a higher BB. Converting a nice road frame is nice, but if you wanna scream down hills and around corners (brakes are rad) the lower BB on a conversion gets sketchy.
